    First Home-made Sporran.

Well, I think there comes a time in every budget minded kiltie's life when he says "I need _____, but I can't afford it, so I'll make it!" This time has come for me. My blank is a semi-formal fur sporran. Whether I like it or not, I need something a little nicer than my Stillwater Nightstalker (Which is great, it's just... nylon.).

So, I found some faux rabbit (or something) fur at my aunt's house. pic:

Sorry about the bad, cell-phone pic.

However, other than this and a needle, I have nothing. So, what else should I buy? Also, anybody have a pattern for a semi-formal fur sporran?

    Thanks

Trust me when I say there are not that many patterns out there. I am making a skunk fur sporran right now. What I did was found a used sporran on ebay. I took the gussett out, and then I had my front and back pieces. I then sewed a wider, better quality gussett on the two original pieces. That is as far as I have gotten so far. I found that to be the easiest way to start out. However, since I have never made a sporran before, you might want to look for advice elsewhere. There are many people on this site that have made many sporrans.

I've made two sporrans, I had to draft the patterns myself. Well, I didn't use a pattern for the first one, and it looked like something that someone made out of scrap in about five minutes, in reality it took me about 30 minutes. Attempt two was made from deer skin, and I am proud of that, but having artificers disease, and wanting more room, I am currently working on one in black buffalo hide with a red suede gusset.

A few things I have learned, when sewing, cut your thread(or sinew) a good bit longer than you think. Use lock stitches every few stitches, when you get to the end of the stitches, use a lock stitch for every stitch, and be sure to tie it off very well. Also, start sewing in the middle and work out, it makes it easier to line things up.

Also when you cut the fur, cut it from the back side, and do it OUTSIDE.

    Good luck

If you want a pattern. go to http://www.kilts-n-stuff.com/Books/s...wear_kilt.html

and order that book, there are 2 patterns in the back, i just finished making the rob roy style sporran and its not that hard. Not to mention the added infromation that is in the book, makes it very valuable indeed.

Most ppl here that have made there own sporrans have started off with those patterns.

My post with my new DIY sporran will be comming soon if you want to how i did it. or just search for "thompson sporran"
