Searching for some knitting help
Hi,
I want to knit argyle hoses without a seam for Kilted Craanen, now that's a challenge and I've been knitting socks for a few years but have never tried this. But gladly to learn more about it and would ask you for any help that you can give.
I've found this site so I'm going to try out that technique and I love short row heals so no problems over there.
What I'm already facing as a challenge is how am I going to get the cuff when turned as neat and stockinette when turned as well as the not turning part on the calf off the leg.
Has anyone knitted argyle without seams? Or any advice or perhaps...perhaps the isue of leisure arts 261 with argyle knitted socks? I know that hose aren't knitted socks but it would help with the argyle and understanding more about it.
Thanks in advange for any help or reactions

I have just started to knit so I am hardly the one to reply -- but I think I understand one of your questions, and I might even have the right answer!
All the kilt hose patterns I've seen my mother knit, and the one I am working on myself, have you knit the cuff and garter portion and then turn the entire piece and start working from the other side for the body of the sock. That way, when you turn the cuff down you are still looking at the right side of the work.
Hope that makes sense and that it is what you were asking about. As for argyles, good luck and let us know if you find a suitable pattern! Lots of interest has been expressed here about making them.

:Hi sydnie17
Well I've been playing around and found out that I didn't understand the color use right so up to ripping this but that's just a try out so I'm ok and I must do this without my DH or DS around as I must keep my head with this. If I'm going to start the whole thing I'm going to make notes and would be very pleased to give that pattern here as well
Yes that's what I meant and ok I'll go like you've said thank you I guess it makes sence just turn it inside out and keep on stockinette. The knitting friend in first posting linked is a great resorse for this but I'm struggling along and of course it would be more great to just be able to print out a hose pattern.
I'm very lucky with kilted Caanen that he doesn't have a big calf otherwise I would fail misserable over there.
At first I'm doing the struggling with this technique than I'm going to test knit one hose for kilted Caanen and if it fits and is ok than we'll order the yarn and I'm going to make this for him.
So I'm going to keep everybody posted or link to my blog for updates on how the progress is on this
Thank you for the input

Also, looking at the pics from your other thread, it looks as if the cuff is double-thickness. That is, they've knitted a plain section that folds down behind the argyle patterned section, and hemmed it. That hides all the nasty argyle backside bits even tho they wouldn't show when the cuff is turned down anyway. Maybe helps to keep them from getting snagged? Don't know, but it does look to me as if the cuff area is double-thickness with a visible hem.

Wow. Really interesting. Looked the other day at your hose begun. That is an inspiration to me. One day I want to be able to make my own hose. I will keep watch here and see what I learn.

Well I've been frogging and ripping out this cuff for four times but now I think I'm on the right way as it is a test hose I'm not that difficult about the yarn and colors but I'm knitting with opal and think that's too thin for the hoses so need to go to a slightly thicker kind of yarn.
I'm having it right in my head now how I'm going to tackle this challenge and I'll try to take some photo's of the progress and place them over here

Have you ever seen these kits? www.woolexpress.com I realize the bright dance colors will not suit your needs, but I have heard lots of good things from people who have used the pattern.
I also have a book called Designs for Knitting Kilt Hose, but it does not contain instructions for whole diamonds, the same is true for the otherwise beautiful book Folk Socks (still - borrow this from the library just to read the Scottish history of knitting).
I am currently attempting a solid colored pair for my son who needs them for Highland Dancing. I may be posting for emergency help myself shortly!

thank you very much for your help, I've been browsing the site and I think it's gorgeous but I don't think I can do anything with it.(yet?) I'm waiting for the colorcard from kilted_caanen and I'm still not any further then where I left as many things happend around here irl. Bad news concerning the husband from my friend and so on. Too busy also with the administration from our work as well and before you know it it's a week further with still no progress on the hose.
It's calling though ;) I can hear it calling... "come on gal...you should go on now don't stall...";)
I hope that with my experiences I also can help others. I must make more notes as what and how I'm knitting but since it's a testhose I'm not too difficult but when the "real" hoses must go on the needles I want to be sure that I knit with the right colors, good yarn and good fitting to kilted craanen
And reading all those informative topics over here on this forum doesn't help either with knitting ...hehehe....
