Kilted vacation to Virgina
I have a week and a half, much needed vacation to the Harrisonburg area of Virginia to visit my mum and go hiking in Shenandoah. Since the last time she saw me, I have gone head over heels for the whole kilt thing and let her know that I was going to be bringing some with me to wear. She said that it wasn't that she minded that I wear one (she is Scottish/English), but she said that the locals may not be too accepting. I tried to brush it off, saying it can't be as bad as West Michigan, but she thinks it will be way worse and that I will get mocked.
Has anyone been in this area of the country/lives in this area and noticed anything like this. I think she is just being a bit over protective, but it still makes me wonder.
And, yes, as soon as I get back, I will post some pics.

Send a PM to The Kilted Wonder. He is now living in Harrisonburg. Maybe you two can have a kilt night. I don't think Harrisonburg would be any different than anywhere else. It's more of a college town with Mad U. I wouldn't worry a hoot about it.

I predict one kilted outing accompanied by your mother, and she'll change her mind.

Several years back, I made a trip to Franklin NC to visit Matt at the Tartans Museum. I was kilted for the entire trip, including connecting up with the Blue Ridge Parkway and following it in to Roanoke to visit my daughter. I had no adverse comments on the entire trip, and in fact met some very nice people along the way. One other thing to think about, Harrisonburg is a College town (JMU) so you won't just encounter locals. I'm sure that quite a few if not most of the students are aware of kilts.

My step daughter is getting married on the last weekend of may in Rapidan Va. At the Rapidan Family Camp. I know that Harrisonburg is just over the mountain. I have to be there from Wednesday thru to Sunday.

Yodhan,
I grew up in H'Burg and now live 1/2 hour away. The town has a very diverse population. Recently in the last 10 years or so folks have moved into the area from Asia, Middle East, Eastern Europe and South of the border-to give you an example the Rockingham County School system accounts for over 30+ different languages being spoken by the students.
You also have James Madison Uni, Eastern Mennonite Uni and Bridgewater College within 10 miles of each other.
The Burg is still "blue collar" but the folks are really pretty nice.
I'm kilted all the time in Harrisonburg and have never had any trouble-just some strange looks from the macho hispanic guys, but no big deal (I actually think they admire a man with enough back-bone to wear a kilt).
You should have no trouble.

My mother's family has lived in Culpeper and Orange counties just east of Harrisonburg for a long time. Lots of Scots ancestry there. I don't think it will be to much of a stretch for them.
