End of traditional sealskin sporran under EU ban

Just read this article a few minutes ago. Anyone else heard anything about this?

Not surprised. Sealskin looks best when it's still on the seal.
    Hooray for the seal huggers!

EC politicians have to justify their gravy train expenses somehow.

This has been in the Canadian news for a few days. The ban will affect all seal products, including meat, oil and skin.

I have to laugh at the sporran picture, though! A real sealskin sporran!

The picture is to chuckle over.

Banning the sale of items already in shops. . . now there's a politician mind-set for you. Although it does make the enforcement aspect more clear-cut. And now that I think of it, there probably won't be many, if any, left in shops by then as folks realize the now-or-never nature of the purchase. Smart retailers will make that clear in shop displays.

Certainly is news here in Canada. Here seal hunting is by no means a lucrative business but a dangerous and necessary one. Seals will still have to be hunted to protect the fish stocks and this partly brought on by over fishing by European poachers illegally in Canadian waters. Sealing is very heavily regulated here and to strict quotas, long gone is the skinning while the animal is still alive and the carcass left on the ice, death is quick and painless and all parts are harvested pelt and meat. It's funny how the EU is banning seal pelts yet turns a blind eye to the fur farms of all over continental Europe animals harvested solely for their pelts, or how, when Britain banned fur farms in 1999 there was opposition from many countries in the EU.

And for the record I do not wear seal products, it's a personal choice.

    That's one seriously long-haired seal!

I support the ban. There's no need for seal harvest, especially the way that some of it is still being done. Whaling and sealing are unnecessary, IMHO. I have three sporrans, all bovine, and they all look great!

I do have an antique seal sporran, but would not buy a new one.
To me that would be like some one skinning one of my pet Shih Tzu's to make a Sporran out of it.

The hunting of seals will continue due to the over population of seals, the ban isn't going to lessen it. It is done as humanly as possible as per regulations as opposed to PETA distruths. I respect your choice but I do ask All of the seal is used, meat oils and pelts, so how is this different from bovine?
