Grandfather Mountain
I'm going to assume that we (X Marks) have a sizable presence at the Grandfather Mountain Games. I were to make the drive from Wisconsin, would somebody share their campsite? I'll bring my own tent.
basically, just wondering who'll be there.

Greg - from what I have seem at GFM there are no camp sites as such. They just pack tents into available space. So the option of sharing someone's site is probably not available.

I camped there 2 years in a row '99 and '00. There are no numbered spaces like at a park. You basically sign in and find an empty spot. I would discourage just showing up with a tent. The price of the space used to be based on the size of a tent. Last time I went I think it cost me $90 for the space and 4 day pass. And if you are camping, you had to buy the 4 day pass. Not sure what it is now.

Greg, you should PM Turpin. He usually goes with his kids. I'm sure he'd be glad to have you nearby.

I'll be there for sure.
Campsites sell out fast, do NOT come unregistered. My advice is to get there mid-week, no later, to have a chance at a decent site. Otherwise, they will cram you in wherever they can. If that is not possible (especially with such a long drive!) then yea, I'd get with a friend that will be there ahead of you, to hold you a spot, or share a tent.
Also, be aware there are two sides to the camping. One side is meant as family camping, with a strict curfew for noise and fires. Across the road, it is a bit more relaxed, but it can be very noisy, and you do have to deal with a lot of drunken revelers.
Oh, and be prepared for the mountain weather. It changes on a dime. Extra tarps for rain and wind protection are a good bet, extra ropes, bungee cords, etc. are always a good plan. Temps range anywhere from the low 40's up through the high 70's. Be prepared!

Thanks for the advice, guys. Again, nothing is set in stone, I'm just seeing if this is possible. Still trying to work out summer plans, ya know?

I'll be there, Greg, and you have to try Grandfather at least once. I'll probably get there Tuesday or Wednesday and try to secure a large enough site so you could piggyback - If you have a 2-4-man tent the cost per nite isn't too bad, but you also commit to a 4-day campers pass to the games that is good for all activity on the mountain.
BTW, camping opens July 3. Although it first come, first served, some folks traditionally get teh same space every year. And God forbid you should trespass on Wilson's spot or the site of the siver cathedral (ginormous example of tarpology).
check out the website as soon as your plans firm up and see if you might not be better off just registering. But PM me when you know and we can talk more.
