Aww, how sweet :)
My mother called me a little while ago to tell me she was sending me some dishes that she wants me to have. She told me that one of the boxes will have an envelope on top -- I need to be careful with it and check it out as soon as I can. It has a pin in it that she is sending for Christopher. She thought he might be able to use it for a kilt pin. Awww!
I have no idea if he will be able to use it, but I'm just tickled that she remembers terms like "kilt pin" from my talking about kilts and accessories, and was thinking about him. Isn't that sweet?
If it does work out nicely and he wants to use it, I'll try to post a photo. I'm not sure, though -- it might not work well for a kilt pin. We'll have to see. There is another pin she wanted to send him, but wasn't sure if it would work as a kilt pin. She's going to try to send me a photo of it first to see if he might like it.
I just thought it was so sweet of her

Remind Christopher that the phenomenon of the kilt pin is a new one, and that there are no hard and fast rules. I personally whatever pin I feel like sticking there (unless it's a semiformal occasion.) Let us know what it is when you get it! I'm curious now.

Thanks everyone! It's funny... I grew up with no idea there were even Scottish names in my family tree (duh, me heheh) and my dad thought there was Irish somewhere on his side but didn't know for certain. He was interested in our ancestry, but really never sought it out like I have (genealogy, music, etc). He adores it, though, and has taken a bit of an interest in it although his health makes it hard for him to talk to me these days, so I don't know how he feels in detail.
Anyway, so I grew up fascinated by Scotland, bagpipes, the kilt and everything, but figured they didn't have anything to do with my family. Of course, now that I know a little more, I'm embracing that fascination and have chatted about it with my parents. It never occurred to me to think they would be horrified at seeing my husband wearing a kilt until I read about the troubles some members here have posted about. Still, I was relieved when I sent them photos of us and their words describing Christopher were things like "proud" and "handsome" (yay!). They've done little things here and there to help out with the kilt thing. Last year, my mom wanted to send some birthday money for him to buy some nicer kilt hose (he decided to hold off on that for a little while). It's just nice to see them getting involved Then again, she enjoys keeping an eye out for little things like that. When I was sewing my bustle gown, she sent me things like jewelry and lace fans. Too cute!

If I heard her correctly, she described it to me as being a bit stick-like (I think I'm familiar with the sort of pin she's talking about and I hope it's not too delicate to use) with some stones, but she told me that it looked masculine enough. She's sent me some glittery, feminine pins and jewelry in the past, one of which I ended up using as a kilt pin for myself. I'm just a little worried that it might be a little too small or delicate for his tastes, possibly clash with the tartan (Black Stewart, but still... depending on the stone colors, it might not work), or look too feminine.
Now, the other one she told me about is a silver eagle. I'm very curious about that one.
I think the nicest part behind kilt accessory gifts of course is the thought behind them. That's why I love the one I have on my kilt. It might not be perfect (it can be a tad bit awkward), but it means a lot to me and it makes her happy when she sees me wearing it in photos

Hi Cynthia, how are you.
It was sweet of your mum to send you the goodies, mums are so important to
us ( so are dads, brothers, sisters and the rest of the family) but mums are
the biz.
Give your mum and the rest of the family my best wishes.

I thik a silver eagle would make a terrific kilt pin!

I don't think I'd worry too much about the stone color not "matching" the tartan colors. From what I've read, 17th and 18th century Scots didn't get really worked up about colors matching. They were more concerned with piling on the ornaments. The more the merrier. As for kilt pins, pretty much anything goes, from what I ve picked up. Since your esposo wears his black Stewart casually, there are not many rules to follow. I think if it were me in his situation, I'd be sure to wear the kilt with the "mother-in-law pin" whenever she's around, and thank her profusely.

We really don't see her, sadly She lives in another state and can't travel since she has to take care of my dad. We've been unable to get up there to see them for a while, too. We do appreciate her gifts though, and thank her profusely for thinking of us.
I'm more worried that it's girly bling. I don't think my hubby is into that He doesn't really wear the kilt much at all because he's not pleased with the fit of the kilt anymore and really doesn't have many accessories that he likes enough to bother with it. For a while, he only wore it with a shirt and tie and nice shoes. He actually wants to be able to dress it up even more as well as find some hiking boots that he likes (hasn't found any yet) so he can wear it even more casually.
He's had his eye on battle ax kilt pins. He likes the swords and other kilt pins enough (he also tends to like thistle-style kilt pins), but he feels the ax seems to suit his personality better. He'd love to get a nice ax kilt pin, I think
