New Handknit Hose with Diced Tops

below are some photos of my new pair of hose, handknit by dear old mom. i've reached out to an authority here at xmts to help properly identify them, but i have not heard back from him yet. until i get positive id from him or someone else, i'm referring to them as diced tops. got the pattern out of veronica gainford's designs for knitting kilt hose. the yarn used was 100% peruvian wool from vancouver, wa's knitpicks.com in their palete range. it's beautiful stuff and very affordable, but can only be handwashed.

foot and leg is a brick red while the tops are the same red, forest green and white. i was initially hoping for a brighter red, but when the hose were complete the darker red really did match the stripe in the ferguson modern very well.

when all was said and done, my mom used about $12.00 in yarn and spent 30 hours knitting (and she's a seasoned pro...). i'm happy to report that she's a glutton for a challenge and she says she's moving on to a harder pattern. after she makes a couple pairs for my brothers, my number's bound to come up again!

in the meantime could someone suggest a complimentary color for garter ties?

Those are very nice indeed, I would say for traditional garters any of the complimentary colours in the tartan would work, bottle green, white or blue would be my first choices.

    wow

12.0 dollars. Though you can not put a price on the hard work she put in to them! Cherish those.

I am betting a shop would charge atleast 150.00 for hose of that quality.

Bottle green and blue would both work well for garter ties. Those are some great hose!!

Those are some very nice-looking hose, and I'm sure you'll wear them proudly.
As to what the tops are, I can tell you what they're NOT:
They're not really diced, because dicing is usually done with two colors and a mixture (marl) of those two colors.
They're not Argylls, since they have no rakers (stripes crossing the diamonds).
They're not entrelac, since they don't cross each other.

In short, I think you have some unique hose that will be the envy of everyone who sees them. Please congratulate your dear mother on a job well done.

thanks, all. i'm very pleased with them and grateful, as well. will probably go for a pair of navy blue ties and a pair of forest ties.

mods, please change the title of this thread to
new handknit hose with neither diced, argyl nor entrelac tops

Even at a paltry $10.00 an hour that's $300.00 in labor costs alone....a treasure for sure!
