Navy Ball & Marine Corps Ball
Navy Ball is coming up on 17 Oct 09, and the Marine Corps Ball is coming up on 14 Nov 09. I wonder if Rocky will stock some Navy and Marine Corps tartan in PV for folks attending these events. Sport Kilt has 'em, but I would rather buy from Rocky.

The Navy tartan is a proprietary tartan to Strathmore Woolen Mills in the UK. I had paid them a flat fee for the 'right' to weave 130 M of that tartan a year or so ago, but we're pretty much out of it now (might be enough for 1 more kilt or so). After that we're not going to carry it any more as it's too expensive to pay for the right to weave it, and then pay a higher than average cost to have it specially woven. OTHER companies in the low end of the market do not pay those royalties, but still produce the tartan. We just don't agree with reproducing a tartan without permission, so we don't.
The Leatherneck (AKA Marine Corps) tartan is available for anyone to produce, but with Jerry from SWK and SK and others selling it, we opted not to carry it as part of our stock range. If anyone is looking for a quality (yet cheap) kilt in the USMC tartan, check out SWK (stillwater kilts).
BTW... I appreciate you checking with us first!

I appreciate your feelings Rocky, but I might remind you, your kilts are on a different level than SWK and SportKilt. I understand you cannot carry every tartan, and business is business, but I hope one day you can reconsider, because you offer a superior product.
I own one of your casuals, and to be honest, I would have bought the Leatherneck if you offered it. I would also have purchased a saffron casual if you offered that too. I like what you offer, because it's made to a higher standard, and better fit.
I like SWK because of Jerry's service, I got a couple kilts that are acrylic, they are what they are... I now see why PV is a better option, but I will definately get my moneys worth out of them.
I guess it comes down to apples to apples.... What you offer is one thing, and what they offer is another....

Rocky,
If there's enough US Navy PV tartan left for a 44 waist - I'd like to buy your last kilt in that fabric. Although I am an Air Force/Air Guard type, I served a year on a joint tour with the Navy in Iceland. (back when we had a base in Iceland)
Thanks, ColMac

Just to set the record straight, the Birthday of the U. S. Navy is 13 October, and the Birthday of the United States Marine Corps is 10 November.
Birthday Balls can be held anytime they can be scheduled....usually close to the dain question. There is not a specific date for Birthday Balls. Only a specific unit or organization is having a local Birthday Ball on the dates mentioned.

Yes, I was referring to the DFW Texas dates.

and it's GONE
I just bought the last of Rocky's US Navy PV tartan, and USAK is running me up a kilt. Set for the military balls now.

Good for you! I really like Rocky's kilts, after I am done getting my box pleat Leatherneck from Steve and my jacket and vest, I want to get a semi traditional from Rocky..solid color... Green I am thinking now.
