Meeting Cousin from Ontario at Brampton

A second cousin who is a professor at Kingston Ontario University had been attending a conference in York this week with one of his colleagues. They had travelled by rail from Manchester airport direct to York but on their return journey they hired a car so that they could meet up with me today while I was on duty at the airport. Here I am with cousin Doug in front of the Vulcan. One of my rare non-kilted days as I was up and down the ladders all day showing the public around the inside of the v-bomber.

When I came off duty we went into the nearby town of Brampton for some refreshment. Brampton was established as a market town by charter of King Henry III in 1252. It was here that Prince Charles Edward Stuart was staying when he was handed the keys of Carlisle following the surrender of the city to the Jacobite uprising of 1715. The town later gave its name to Brampton, Ontario, which was founded in 1853 but has now outgrown the original Brampton.

The Moot Hall in Brampton was built in 1817 by the Earl of Lancaster on the site of an earlier mediaeval hall. The originally open sided ground floor market was later enclosed and is now the local tourist office. The town is close to Hadrian's Wall.

The Howard Arms is an early nineteenth century inn which serves real ales.

It's always nice to keep in touch with relatives. Hope you both had a good time.
