Perhaps, just perhaps, but which one????
So, My one and only is off for adjustments, fortunately to be taken in, not let out!
Which led me to the consideration of, answering the ever present call for scratching that persistent itch....and no I didn't mean a visit to the doc, I mean ...yes....another kilt.
This led me to wonder, so here is my wandering wondering:
I am thinking box pleat to portray an earlier look, that much is easy. I know that Baron Kilmarnock, chief of the Boyd clan wore Stewart.I have been told that the Chief of the Stewart clan requested that septs wear old Stewart. There is also the theory that the Boyd's originated from Butte, so there is Stewart of Butte. The Boyd's also merged into the Hays after Cullodon, so there is the Hay. Last but not least the Ayrshire district tartan, which was just recently approved, looks very much like the MacKenzie tartan, quite beautiful in my opinion, and is also the district in which Kilmarnock is located.
Now, I am leaning toward Ayrshire district, if for no other reason then it offers a complete switch from the bold red!
I do realize the truth of the historical fact that tartans were really a "whatever the weaver had" situation, but still I enjoy some relevance, and I am feelin like a kid in a candy store!

Perhaps you could consider going down the "ancient, weathered ,modern" route of the tartan that you already have. I am also not convinced (sorry everyone) that the box pleat is the way to go either.

Boyd Ancient from Lochcarron is a more muted variety, if a bit orange. The Ayrshire is a nice tartan if you feel an affinity there. As Jock says, I too am unsure about going the box pleated route unless, of course, expense is an issue. I just don't believe they swing and hang as well but that is just my personal opinion and you must make your own.

If you are wanting to go with the old style, then why not go with the oldest connection tartan and and Jock suggested, get it in the ancient and weathered.

I'm a big fan or the box-pleated kilts in the ancient or weathered tartans. Go for it!

One one hand I agree with Jock and Phil, the weathered and ancient looks tone down the 'in your face' red of most kilts. I have gotten to the point where I prefer both of these looks to the modern colors.
I know that others will make comments on your choice of box pleats, but I own two of them and really like them. Some folks forget that in part of the US, it gets really warm and 8 yards of 16oz fabric gets down right uncomfortable. I have found the box pleats to be a great alternative.

That's why I choose the box pleat, because in Texas it's not unusual to be over 100 f 90 days+ straight in the summer, and we see it in the 90's often through September. Let's say summer is the better part of three seasons, here..

I agree with the above...you'll be loving the box pleat when the weather is warm, and weathered colors will provide a very different look from your other kilt.

I can't wait to get a box-pleated kilt myself! I say go with your instincts---which seem to be pointing you at the District tartan---you'll certainly be happier that way.
Cheers!

I think Ayrshire Ancient would look quite nice in a box-pleated kilt.
