Ok
I'm primarily of Danish descent. However, I was taken completely under the wing of my second family, who are very Scottish(The Murdochs).
I am a huge fan of the Scandinavian traditions, but, I love the Scottish traditions as well----I LOVE me a kilt.
I wonder, would it be considered socially unacceptable to use the Murdoch tartan? Maybe I'll just stick with the solid colors.......
decisions, decisions........
I hope that I haven't posted in the wrong forum.....

Welcome, from Inverness-shire. A very few clans are quite possessive with their tartan and I am not sure if the Murdoch clan is one of those. I doubt it, but why not write to the clan association ,or better still ask the head of the clan(if there is one) if he would mind you wearing his tartan. A small courtesy, but it is appreciated. Failing that, some would just buy the tartan, probably in kilt form and just get on with it. It seems to me that you have a far better reason for wearing that tartan(is there one?) than many.

Jock sums it up well; courtesy and respect go a long way in these matters.

If you follow Jock's advice (and who wouldn't?) you might even receive a special commendation or letter of appreciation from the head/chief of the Murdochs. Good luck!

As usual, Jock gives excellent advice. I would never wear a tartan I had no connection to, barring the universal ones, of course. That's another thought- there are plenty of universal tartans. Harley-Davidson has one of you're a biker!

Several years ago we invited a lady physician my wife worked with to attend the Stone Mountain games. The doc didn't have a drop of Scottish blood: her family had only been in the States about 2 generations and had come from Eastern Europe I think. But she's an avid festival goer and fell in love with the SMHG! She loved it so much she works the MacMedic (First Aid) tent each year now. We happily made her an honorary Colquhoun and she wears our scarf (and marches with us when she has time in the Parade Of Tartans).
A couple of years ago the doc restarted another lady's heart so we were real glad to have her around and immensely proud she wears our tartan!

Murdoch is usually considered sept of Macdonald or Macpherson. It sounds like a family council is required to sort out your "tartan".
