Kilted Wal Mart experience (My kilt had a stalker!)
I know, most of your groaned when you read the title. "What idiocy did Nighthawk have to endure this time?" It was an interesting experience, and as most of you know, I don't feel a need to clutter the board with run of the mill experiences that we all have- but this one was special. I was shopping for a new sketch pad, and had never bought one at Wal Mart before, so I didn't know where to look. I was pacing, trying to figure it out, when a lady behind practically shouted "Wow!! Where'd you get your kilt?" (I was wearing a Stillwater saffron shadow.) I turned around, and it was a Wal Mart employee standing there, looking very excited- and I mean very! She was blushing and grinning and gushing all over me like a little kid looking at a new puppy! I told her where I got it, directed her to a few of our vendors here (turned out that she and her fiance were planning a Scottish wedding, and couldn't find a local source for kilts, and so had all but given up- I gave her my card and offered to help.) She thanked me, and I asked her where I might find art supplies. I don't do much shopping, so I get lost easily. She directed me to the appropiate isle, and followed me to it talking to me about kilts- and after I found the sketch pad, followed me to the deli area, and from there, she followed me to the check stand! It was a little comical- my kilt had a stalker. That's a new one for me!

What did you get at the deli ?
Glad all turned out well.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

Good story. Definitely not a run-of-the-mill experience.

I happen to work overnight stock at one of our Walmarts here where I live and have that happen with customers all the time. I was wearing my Saffron SWK and was up on a ladder stocking bottled water and had an (apprx) 80 year old grandmother standing under the ladder looking up smiling at me. And my managers have no problems with me wearing a kilt to work on the shift that I work.

Walmart and kilts can be fun. I think I have posted this before, but about six months ago I was in Wally's world rather late. I had on my black Utilikilt. A little girl of about 7 walked up to me asking "why are you wearing a skirt?". I tried to explain about the kilt. Went right over her head and she continued to ask the same question. Her mom was getting a chuckle out of her little girl pounding me into the ground by not accepting an answer she did not understand. I finally told her I just liked them. Well, that was an acceptable answer to her. As I walked away she said "I don't like to wear skirts. Everyone can see my underwear". As Art Linkletter would say "kids say the darndest things".

Here's another WalMart story:
A guy used to take bagpipe lessons from me. This guy had a huge white beard and at Christmas time was what I think they call a "real beard Santa". They have their own organisation- the Society of Real Beard Santas or some such. However this guy was a small slim guy who had to wear padding to be Santa.
Anyhow he was getting started on the pipes and was dismayed at the expense of kilts. (This was back before "casual kilts" etc were around.)
So one day he's shopping at WalMart and spies, in the womens' clothing section, nicely made kilts exactly like a traditional mens' kilt, complete with three buckles, made of nice wool in genuine tartans etc. They only cost $40 or something.
So our fellow starts trying on these "kilts" and finds one that fits perfectly and buys it.
At the dinner table that night his wife, a regional manager for WalMart, says "I got a strange call from one of my store managers today. She said a guy that looks like Santa Claus went into the women's section, started trying on dresses, and bought one!"
"Honey, that was ME..." our fellow admitted.

Great stories guys. I generally try to avoid big box stores like WalMart. Guess I'm missing out on interesting kilted encounters.
