What materials are of use for sporran makers?

    Morning all,

Through my knife making I have a lot of contacts with hunters. I get venison, duck and other meats through them.

I have noticed that a lot of makers use different materials & was wondering if I should be asking my friends for the skins of stuff like the deer & ducks? Tanning isn't usually expensive.

    Thx,
    Jim

I think there was some talk of duck sporrans, maybe even full mask, but I have no idea how that would be handled for a sporran

If you can get the hides tanned, then go for it.

Small bones ( or pieces thereof) might be of use for toggles and pins. You can probably find good use for antlers, too.

That full mask duck sporran might look pretty good with a couple of feet as tassels, but you'd probably have to modify the design for a larger opening...

Certainly a sporran to raise a few eyebrows. Waterproof to boot. ;)

    Thanks for the replies.

I think I will pester some of them for the pelts.

Here is a site I found with a list of prices - http://www.angelostannery.com/hunters.htm

I know one of my brother-in-laws does quite a bit of vermin trapping so I might be able to talk him out of some pelts instead of wasting them. I don't approve of killing just for the furs but he does it to help the farmers in his area.

Cased badger, otter, muskrat, beaver, raccoon, and bobcat pelts would be of particular value if you have the desire to start making sporrans. I would think with a little practice and a heavy duty sewing machine, one would be able to get the hang of it. The construction of the sporrans I own is pretty simple, but one needs the appropriate tools if going for a professional look. Hmmm. Wonder what a good heavy duty sewing machine would cost...

    Cordially,

    David

My leather working skills are so bad I wouldn't even begin to think about doing them. I would hope to use them as trade fodder.

A hunting knife for a skin
    A skin for a sporran
A sporran for sgian dubh, maybe

Ya, I understand what you mean. I can do a lot of basic leather work, but I have a very difficult time cutting the leather properly with a pattern.

Shameless self-promotion I know I'm selling one in the for sale section that I've used to sew elk hide with the fur on.
