A cravat with an Argyll?

I've seen cravats worn at formal events on occasion and it seems to me it would lend itself well for "dressing up" a barathea Agyll and waistcoat. Has anyone chosen a black cravat and pin over a black bow tie for a formal occasion? Did you like the result?

As long as you're wearing a tall collar and a vest, the cravat looks great. I've been trying to find a decent one myself.

Consider, though, that the Ruche Tie is an alternative that looks a tad more appropriate than an actual cravat. Basically it is a cravat tied in a different knot.

And, just to be a wise guy, I always stop into any mens' wear store that I pass and ask if they have them...you should see the blank looks that I get from the salespeople...

This was at a formal (although not specifically listed as black tie) dinner in Edinburgh at an international society meeting for folks who do what I do. A newfound friend is on the right in his PC. (Please forgive me the white socks---I had not been a forum member long enough to learn about the "white socks issue" at that time).

I personally like the looks of a Ruche tie although others will tell you it is a poor man's excuse for a real tie or cravat. To each his own.

I'm afraid this is one of the rare occasions where Sandford and I will have to disagree on a sortorial manner. I don't see why a cravat would be out of place with the kilt at all. I think it's a nice alternative to the standard bow tie or neck tie, and adds a nice historic flair. I think a traditional cravat is far superior to the rouche tie, by the way.

I have to say that I reaaly like the look! It has a nice "antique" look that I think complements highland wear wonderfully!

I think that historically you will find the cravat has been an item of less formal attire. That being the case, if worn with a five or six button waistcoat it should transform the daytime look of an Argyll jacket. Indeed, it would also work if worn in the evening instead of a dark suit and tie. However, it really doesn't cut it for formal evening wear when others would sport a white shirt, black bow tie, and low cut three or four button waistcoat.

If you like the somewhat Edwardian look of the cravat, by all means wear it-- but not as a substitute for proper formal evening attire.
