So, what exactly is wrong with the brooch? I rather like penannular brooches, and I think that the gentleman is wearing a particularly nice on. I haven't seen many done in silver and with as much depth or thickness as the one he is wearing. The picture is a bit fuzzy, but there is also a hint of some fine metal working.

The problem is that the subject is dressed in ca. 1745 Jacobite garb, and penannular brooches fell out of use in the early Middle Ages....

I read somewhere that this particular gentlemen, Mr Corby, describes his garb as neo-romantic Jacobite, nineteenth century celtic revival... with a personal touch.

Not exactly reenactor.

here is possibly a better photo of the man in question, taken at Culloden memorial service last year

I don't see there being a problem with the penannular brooch, things like that where handed down from father to son, and it's perfectly suited for the use to which it is being put.
