Burn's Night/Dinner

I have to say that having just relocated to Texas a little over a year ago, I am very surprised to find there are not more Burn's Nights in the area (North Texas). With so much of a Celtic/Scottish presence including pipe bands, etc., I don't understand it. Are there activities going on like this I am unaware of? Maybe private functions I guess. I'm still trying to find venues to keep informed. Thanks!

Scottish Society of Dallas on the 23rd, and Scottish Rite on the 28th... that's all I've found. The Eismann Centre in Richardson is doing something on the 23rd, as well... but it's 110$ to attend and there aren't any details on their website to give me a reason to attend.

I'm playing with my pipeband for the one the Scottish Society of Dallas is having. Where I moved here from does not have as many Celtic/Scottish activities, but there are dozens of Burn's Night functions there. Just seems odd to me.

The Denton Celtic Society is having theirs on the 25th. You're right, Burn's Night celebrations are pretty sparse.

The Heather & Thistle Society is having its annual Rabbie Burns Supper on Saturday evening, January 23, 2010. Ticket sales indicate that attendance will be way down from last year and may result in the end of it all. Think of coming to our event, cajuncelt.

I may do it just to hear the kids from St. Thomas if nothing else.

. Off the subject, but I did find some good haggis here. It's from the Caledonian Kitchen. And now, WAY off the subject...you and I met briefly @ the Houston games.You were at your tent when I had just finished my pipe competition. I never asked, but do you play? I ask because I am a MacIntyre on my mother's side and the MacIntyres have a GREAT piping history I'm sure you're aware of. I plan a trip someday to Argyll with my wife to the ancient MacIntyre clan's land in Glennoe.

Yes I pipe, but I rarely get a chance to compete or perform anymore because of business travel. That's me piping in my avatar. Oh yes, I know about our clan heritage as pipers. It's possible that the Piper of Duntrune was a MacIntyre. I remember you at my tent, but you didn't hang around for very long. I've been to Glennoe twice - May of 2003 and July 2008. You missed out on the Worldwide Gathering of Clan MacIntyre, cajuncelt!

Jim Walters is the owner of Caledonian Kitchen. He provides a frozen version of his haggis that is cooked and served at the host hotel for the aforementioned Rabbie Burns Supper here in Houston. It's better than the canned.

I was sorry we missed the "aftergames" events in Houston, but that was my first competition in that heat/humidity! Whew. I was punished.
I would have liked to have gone to that. Being a piper and being a MacIntyre is like being a MacCrimmon and being a piper. I've seen Glennoe from Google Earth (lol) and can't wait to visit.
I tried the sirloin and lamb haggis the Caledoninan Kitchen had. Both were excellent. Honestly some of the best I've had.

As a MacIntyre piper, you should know two tunes: High Road to Gairloch (which I'm sure you know; written in 1547 as the 'MacIntyre March') and 'The MacIntyres Salute', a piobaireachd written in 1701. The latter is quite a cool-sounding piobaireachd with a crunluath a mach.
