Elbow patches on Braemar jackets?

I just bought a nice jacket from a local thrift store and I'm in the process of converting it. I'm worried, however, that since it's an older jacket if I take the elbow patches off there will be evidence that the original color has faded while the fabric under the patches remained the same. Haven't started ripping any stitches yet though so I'm not sure if it's even a valid concern. The jacket may not have faded at all. In either case I'm wondering if having elbow patches on a Braemar and/or Crail Jacket is a no-no.

I can't say that elbow patches are a no-no for your jacket. What I would say however, is that elbow patches would, in Scotland at least, suggest that your jacket would be earmarked to the less formal end of the scale. Country walks, gardening, BBQ's, for example.

Look at the fabric in places where it does not get exposed - under pocket flaps, where it's turned inside at the cuff, back of lapels, etc - you will soon see if there is any evidence of fading.

Why not keep them on? It'll make your jacket unique and not just another one off the assembly line.

I see no reason to take them off at all, I'd leave them on, of course as Jock says it would relegate the jacket ot less formal wear, but I see nothing wrong with it.

I have them on one of my day jackets. Even though jackets are sold with them now before they are worn out, it kind of gives them that "older than dirt, hand me down look" that patina cannot be bought.
