Firefighter Society Uniform
Hello All! I need your help AGAIN! I am currently serving on the Uniform Board of my local Firefighter Emerald Society. Although Emerald Societies are traditionally Irish we are proud to have members of both Irish and Scottish heritage. We would like to proudly display this in our uniform.
We have chosen the Modern Shaw Tartan and we are trying to match other items with it. Most of the scheme is set but the Class B uniform shirt isn’t. Our Class C (mess for Pub Crew Duty) is a Black polo with either green uniform pants or Shaw Kilt, Green hose with red flashes, and a tartan flat cap. Our Class B is either green uniform pants or Shaw tartan Kilt, Green hose with red flashes, Glengarry, and we can’t decide between Black or White Uniform shirt.
The upside to the White is that we are located in Coastal Georgia and it wouldn’t be as hot as the Black, especially for the pipers. But the Black looks pretty slick, and it matches the black polo shirts.
So Black or White? And we aren’t talking Michael Jackson ! Thanks!

Firstly I have to question flat caps as a part of any uniform, they really are a rather informal piece of headwear, however you were asking about a White or Black dress shirt. Having seen the tartan I think a Black Shirt would make a nice outfit, and it may help your band stand out from the rest, as you say the polo shirt is Black.

Much as I like flatcaps for casual wear, I don't think they should be part of any uniform!
Otherwise, I'd go with the black shirts.
Order of the Dandelion, The Houston Area Kilt Society, Bald Rabble in Kilts, Kilted Texas Rabble Rousers, The Flatcap Confederation, Kilted Playtron Group.

I think that tartan flat caps belong to golfers or football fan's wearing Jimmy wigs....!
Would you consider a beautiful handmade Irish Caubeen with tails..! I am the proud owner of two, they really are very beautiful and can be used for other occassions beside the Pub part of your society.
A black or even Emerald green Polo shirt looks fantastic with a Kilt and are easy to embroider.
Below is a picture of one of my Caubeen's, it was handmade in Ireland by a company called Mossie croft for $40 (have a search on ebay or search for old posts here on X.marks) and is made to your exact measurements.
Be sure to post pics of your society in their new gear and all the best.

The Caubeen does look nice! I believe we are going with Glengarrys for our actual uniform. The flat cap was brought up by other members. It is only a pub crawl "uniform" that they can wear to an informal meetings but I get what you all are saying. Thanks for the input so far! Looking forward to more.

I'd say black. I think the uniform will look great with green hose and red flashes, as you say, too!
It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom -- for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself.

I'm going to be the opposing view, I say white shirt and you can add in a black waist coat. From there you can dress up the outfit with a black coat and tie. GOing with a black shirt, I think you greatly limit your options up top.
Still casual but a bit dressier
Add a tie
Add a Jacket
Or dress it down to just the tie or jsut the coat

I would second Cavscout's thoughts...I think you have more options with the white than the black. If your group is feeling particularly flush, why not have both colours and then you can dress to the occasion.
