There is a simple pattern in Thompson's So You're Going to Wear The Kilt, but you can do pretty well if you make your own- A gusset helps. If you don't have a handy sporran to copy, be sure to make a mock-up. If you do copy one, allow a little extra for seams, etc. We look forward to the finished product.

I have two templates that I made onto carboard. One was from tracing one of my sporrans, the other was from tracing a saucer from the cupboard that I thought was a good size. For the flap on that one I traced a bowl that I placed over the saucer shape and moved until I thought the flap would be a nice size. I have a pew pics here in the DIY thread if you want to see how they turned out.

Not to give away my trade secrets, but I can say really the first thing you need is graph paper. I buy mine from Rite-Aid and its almost legal size. Take a sheet of graph paper, fold it in half. You can now begin to design your sporran. The key word is symmetrical, so you can take a plate, a compass, anything with curvature, and a ruler and design your own template which will be even on both sides and look awesome. Give it a shot-You'll see.
