returning a sgian dubh to hose?

Greetings,

I have a sgian dubh question: after removing a sgian dubh from your hose (leaving the sheath IN the hose) HOW does one return it? Is the sheath supposed to stay in the hose? If so, how is one supposed to aim it just right to get in in the sheath )that is still in the hose)?

I had a discussion along the same lines a while back, originally about getting it out, but led to some talk of putting it back in.

The sheath should be inside the hose, and sometimes (depending on the type) way down in there. You'll have to pull the top of the hose out with your other hand to get it back in right. If not, you're likely wearing it too high.

There is no elegant way to do this! Basically, if the sheath is still in your sock, you gently poke about until the sharp pointy thing is safely returned to the sheath.

I feel for the pointed part of the sheath and push upwards towards the top of my hose. When it reaches the top, I re-sheath and push sgian and sheath back down.

1.Stick thumb and index finger into top of hose and grasp top of hilt.
2.Pull hilt up until it is visible at the top of hose.
3.While still holding top of hilt insert tip of sgian dubh into opening in hilt and push all the
way into hilt.
4. Adjust sgian dubh and hilt to where you are comfortable wearing them.

At all times remember it is a knife and can cut you. You probably should not remove the sgian dubh after you have started in on the single malt.

It isn't rocket science.

i think Jock is right. There is no elegant way. I find often it's easier to just fish the sheath out, put the sgian back in it, and replace the whole business in the hose top.

Just curious... As a strictly ornamental feature to kilt attire, is there any reason to remove and replace a sgian dubh (blade without sheath) frequently enough to be a problem? Unless you have a very nice one (maybe a damascus steel blade, or some sort of engraving) and enjoy sharing it with others? I understand that many are sold with a dull blade, making it useless for cutting anything.

If i am carrying a knife no matter where if resides. it will be sharp and functional.

I wish that I had come accross these answers a few years ago, I managed to put my sgianthrough my hose on it's way to the sheath

. Fortunately the hole was easy to repair and you can't see it in the fold.
I now agree with Jock and basically fish the sheath out and replace in the hose

If I were to find myself in fear of my life and had to draw my sgian in anger, it would slip easily from the sheath, which would remain in my sock. In such a situation I wouldn't really be too concerned about getting it back in.

If I remove my sgian to show a friend the blade, or to utilize the blade for cutting a stubborn piece of steak, I slip my fingers down into the sock, grasp the sheath, remove the still-sheathed knife, use it, then reverse the process. I don't like the image of whipping a bare blade from my sock in polite company.

Like others, I never carry a knife unless it is honed and stropped to a fine edge.
