    Scottish Diminutives (no not the HLI !)

    Can you think of any Scottish first names which, when shortened, are uniquely or mainly Scottish in usage ?
    A couple of possible examples come to mind:-

    Eck = Alexander

    Chic = Charles

    Gogs = Gordon

    Boab = Robert (okay – that’s maybe not strictly Scottish, it’s slangy)

    Jeemy = James (richt oot o’ Oor Wullie Jings, Crivvens !)

    Wullie = William

    Tam = Thomas

    There must be others !

    I would have thought Robert would be, more usually, Rab or Rabbie.

    I knew a Scot called Karlos but his Mum named him Charles.

    Also a Stephen called Ston - but that might have been male bravado rather than common usage.

    Campbell = Cammy?
    It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom -- for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself.

    Colin is not a common first name in the States; so, Col for short I have not heard at all; except in Scottish films or TV shows. Sandy, Billy and Gordie, I've heard plenty so no go.

    I thought you were talking about dwarves. Now that would be an interesting challenge for a kiltmaker.
