Question about sporran straps.

When I wear my sporran strap the buckle is literally a pain in my back. Is wearing the buckle to the side or at the sporran a no no, how do you deal with this problem?

Me too!!!!

I now wear the buckle of my sporran strap in front. Tuck it behind the sporran. If it shows a bit so what!?

Not only don't have the lump in my back it is MUCH MUCH easier to buckle and unbuckle in front.



If you look close you'll see the sporran strap buckle just to the right of the sporran.

I have felt your pain as well. I wear it on the side. I haven't had anyone give me any hassle, and if they do......

Count me in on those who wear the buckle at the side. In my opinion it avoids wear and tear on car upholstery and furniture, as well as being more comfortable.

If the kilt police have ever noticed me doing this, they never challenged me on it. If anyone does, I will demand a reference to the relevant statute in the Kilt Code.

I agree with all of the above. I only wear a strap; I never wear the chains. Just for that reason. I tend to slide my sporran on to my left hip when sitting to eat, or driving, or dancing close, or going to the loo. So easy - no fighting with a buckle in the small of your back.

Slightly off topic. I usually use sporran hangers for casual use. I have a formal chain for more formal events. I'm thinking about making a sporran strap. Does the sporran strap go through the loop on the back of the sporran, or do you fasten it to the short strap that has the "D" rings on it?

The straps talked about above are solid, one piece belts that run all the way around and through the channel on the back of the sporran. They typically range between 1/2" and 1" in width.

I use a strap that has trigger snaps on each end and an adjustable buckle on the back that attaches to the D-rings on the back of the sporran, or the D-ring strip that slips through the channel of the sporran.

I prefer the trigger snaps because they allow for quick and easy on/off of the sporran and once it's sized to fit, I don't have to monkey with a buckle again. I can still swing the sporran to the side for restroom visits or sitting or slow dancing and the trigger snaps swivel and flex more than a one piece strap so less pressure is applied to the groin.

Great explanation! All of my sporrans have the little piece with D-rings on the back. I do the same as Cavscout, especially the taking on/off and the slow dancing part. This thread has raised my awareness of the practicality of the one-piece sporran belt, though, as far as the buckle at the back goes.
