Thinking about designing a Wall Sporran Display Case

I have a number of sporrans that I would like to hang up on display when not being worn, and I had this idea to build this case that would allow me to place some of my more favorite items, but mainly to hang up my Sporrans in a safe, dust-free case that would protect them.

I am thinking a wall mount wooden case with glass doors so you can see in. Then I got really creative and thought about adding some little LED lights, some backing, and then some more compartments for the little things.

I would like the sporrans to hang, especially the ones with a lot of fur.

I kind of have my ideas worked out, but looking for advice, opinions and concerns. I would like to be able to display eight sporrans.

I think this is a good idea and you should expand it if possible. That is to say include room for your sgians dubh, kilt pins, plaid brooches and any cap badges that aren't in caps.

If you are thinking of doing this yourself, could you produce a diagram and cutting plan so we can copy?

I just made a sporran that turned out to be unwearable, but it looks pretty good from the front. I figured I'd use it as a display piece, so it is sitting on the bookshelf in the den.

I have a an incredible solution that I use. Here in Sacramento, my cousin in law David Freriks is VP of PRecision Plastics. They make clear plexi cases for everything under the sun. If it involves plexiglass, vinyl anything-He makes it. He makes my sporran templates for cutting my leather. He is completely knowledgeable about sporrans (all types and how they need to hang in a case) and he could design and build you a case for an EXTREMELY good price. lighted display cases are their speciality.

I was thinking of some various storage compartments, but that would make it more like furniture making it more complex. I know if I go that route, I will be working in my father-in-law's shop with all his high-end gadgets that make that seemly (not so) easily-looking stuff easier.

Yeah, that would be something. My father-in-law found a knock-off Louie the 14th Wardrobe, so it has that rounded stuff going on with burl veneer, with a lot of wood work. He blew out the panels and replaced with glass, and made a gun cabinet out of it. Sounds strange, except that it looks really cool in his game room. You could build a whole shrine out of something like that.

My problem is that that I live in a small house, so I have to think tight, and less furniture.

You did give me a fun idea, which is what I am really looking for while beginning to draft. If you take plexiglass, and put an LED light next to it, that whole piece of plastic illuminates. So I lay a piece of plexiglass down at angle, and lay the sporrans down, with say a wood channel behind the plexiglass to lay the straps. What you would see is lighted background, with sporrans laying on them. I think it would be classical, yet very modern looking. I would still like a very wooden case. My house is very wood-centered. We did a lot of wood-working when we bought it, and I like that stained wood look. I prefer Oak with a dark red stain.

YES!!!! He is an absolute master of that technique. I've even seen clip boards he had made with colored plexi that had a small led at the clip that made the whole thing light up...Amazing.......Although the clip board was orange that illuminated to a neon orange when lighted...Not sure if thats what you want ;-)

Anyway, because he is knowledgeable about sporrans and their designs (He has actually sat with me and watched me build one from start to finish....More than once actually) He'll know exactly how to work with you should you decide to go that route.

I have a wall mount with pegs that I got from IKEA for hanging part finished and finished sporrans, but I too need a case and will be having him build one in the spring.

I purchased those over the door hat hangers. Basically a elastic strip that hooks at the top and bottom of a door, with hard plastic "tabs" spaced about 12-14" apart that you can hang hats on. I thread a piece of leather behind each sporran to make a loop, then hang them up. I have two of these door hangers side by side and they are covered with sporrans. Makes my bathroom door sort of furry looking. Gives people a double take when I send them to where the bathroom is.
