    black MacSween

This may not be the right discussion but I like the category and in lieu of a better option...

Over a year and a half ago Matt Newsome designed a tartan for me...a variant of the MacQueen tartan...both to create a a more conservative aspect and to, for me at least, take the tartan back to its roots--MacSuibhne.

Finally, after so long I had almost forgotten the registry number, the Tartan Authority has included it in the database...Black MacSween (if the link doesn't work the registry number is 7903).

Here's a photo of it in a Matt Newsome box pleat.

I think it's handsome. I wish I could have a pair of trews made of it.

Nice to see you back on the site. I'm a big fan of "proper" trews-- drain pipe legs, high waisted, with fish tail backs-- and think they'd look smashing. Of course, you'll need a proper pair of Wellington's to go with them...

I like that vest you are wearing, along with your kilt!

    DWFII,

Glad to see you posting! I was just thinking the other day that it had been a while since we've seen you on the forum.

Thanks for posting the pic of the outfit, it looks grand. I think the contrasting grey Argyle jacket and waistcoat go very well with the tartan. And the red garters and red leather details on your sporran are just enought to accent the red in the tartan. Looking good!

I like the whole rig, but I guess you disprove what they say about shoemakers' children going barefoot. Those are some very nice moccasins. I think you might also try a red waistcoat for your wilder outings, maybe just a V neck sweater. Those colors- black, grey, red- are a popular combination for argyle hose, so you might think about those as well. It is a good looking tartan and very versatile, I would imagine.

Thanks guys. I suppose I'd have to have Dalgliesh weave another bolt of Black MacSween to have trews made. It's nice to have a unique tartan but it's not very easy to gt ahold of.

I look in on XMarks pretty regular but I've been so busy . I am scanning, recognizing, and converting to pdf an old book on shoemaking and that takes a lot of my free time...when I'm not working.

The waistcoat is of course just one of those old Victorian knock-offs, And the sporran I made. The Argyle jacket is one of Matt's Ettrick tweeds. My wife made the shirt and I have a number of detachable collars I wear with it. She made a pair of tartan hose to match my other kilt and I am holding out for a pair to match this one for Christmas.

I kind of got distracted (by supper) last night and completely forgot to get to one of the main points...

I wanted to thank Matt Newsome for designing the Black MacSween, for having it woven for me, for making a beautiful kilt, and for registering the tartan with the Scottish Tartan Authority.

    Above and beyond, Matt...thanks.

You look great. I can only hope that I look that good when I finally can go kilted. And what a splendid bonnet - it's perfect.
