    Ok, so is this a scam or a genuine conservation effort?

    Good day all,

    While researching something I came across this -

    http://www.mac-sothis.com/

    Ok now most people have seen the name a star, own rain forest and other conservation efforts. There are genuine and fake of all. I am always looking for something special to give my wife and if this is a legit conservation effort I'm game for it. I have came across several of these.

    Thx,
    Jim

    yeah its a load of codswallop someone may own a small patch of land and will sell you something like a square foot or so and then make up some title for you ,if that is the case then everyone i know with a bought house in this country would be lairds and ladys
    about as real as pegasus on his nightly flight from lapland to neverland

    I suggest planting some wild flowers that are native to your area for your wife, Drac. I'm thinking you could probably buy a whole bunch of seeds with that same money, and you would be sure it is true conservation.

    * Only half kidding.

    Don't get me wrong, I would ever even think of taking the whole title thing seriously nor would my wife. As long as it going toward a conservation effort they can make up any certificate they want.

    It's just something fun. I did find one that has links to Lamont through Duncan Castle. Like the naming of stars it's hardly something to take serious.

    Trying too hard. Follow the money. For-profit only IMHO.

    There are some here that are Lairds. Hamish would be one of them. It is a legitimate title that entitles you to very little outside of your one square yard of Scottish turf. A Scottish Laird differs from that of an English Lord if that is the peerage that you were thinking of. It's worth perhaps what you pay for, no more.

    It's legitimate. Except for the bit "a Lord or Lady is called a Laird in Scotland". As Grant says, a laird is not a lord. Our Hamish is the first laird of Lochaber and, I believe, Big Mikey is the third. They each -- and others -- own a few square feet of turf and that has given them the right to use the title "laird".

    There are other Highland estates offering a similar package. It is legit and the owners of the land cut it into small plots, the proceeds go to conservation and to plant native trees It is a good and lucrative way to fund the upkeep of an estate. Yes the title of Laird in Scotland is not the same as Lord in England. It has no other entitlement. I have given gifts of these plots to friends who love the Highlands and they have been well received.
    I have family connections to estate and baronial house owning Lairds, and yes the title is the same for male and female.
