my first kilt is here! swk standard

So just as I was out the door leaving for a 5 hour drive south to Windsor after being disappointed that my kilt had not arrived, it is here! Unfortunately its sitting in a box behind me and since I'm posting this from my blackberry in a parking lot I won't be able to try it on until after my drive

I will post pictures and a follow up of what I think of it as a first time kilt buyer either tonight or tomorrow

ok so I'm sure many of you here have already heard and made your opinions about SWK kilts but i thought i'd ad my two cents for those people still on the fence, or just curious people lurking this forum like I did for a few weeks

(ps sorry no pictures, camera charger gone missing, check their website for photos)

For those in Canada, expect to have to pay a duty fee when your package is delivered, mine was about $24 for the $146.00 usd I spent on the package

    The Kilt

The material was softer than I would have expected, it feels like reel wool and doesn't scratch your legs at all, and has a lining that goes down 12" for added comfort

The length is fine for me, its 24" drop and I'm 6 feet tall, however If I was any shorter, I would most likly want the kilt hemmed if need be or worn higher on my waste, as of now it sits about 1" above my belly button

It is the Blackwatch tartan, however the colours are very nice when veiwed in good lighting, however it is harder to tell when your out in a bar, however this is not a fault of the kilt, just a nature of a dark tartan

    The Sporran
I got the baseline sporran and its good quality leather, only thing is that it is not very big, I can just squeze my wallet and keys in, so what I've done is packed it full with CD's over night which has stretch the leather and given about an extra centermeter give to it
however for about $15 usd, I can't complain especially when it comes with a leather and chain belt

    The Belt
The belt is is the basic one and again good solid leather, not layers of leather and foam that claim to be 100% leather like i've found alot of (not in kilt belts but on belts in general) - It has a velcro underside to it so it is very adjustable

The hose, flashes, Sgian Dubh are all fine no noteable problems that i can see

feel like I may be flogging a dead horse, but I have to say what everyone else has said which is from a first time kilt buyer, I really do feels like I've got my money out of this kilt, and for a college student who is short on cash, this is just perfect for my needs

    My 2 cents

Congrats on the new kilt! The Blackwatch standard, in acrylic, is a good place to start. That was my second step, after a Sportkilt.

Just watch yourself. Your addiction to kilts will likely grow from there, as has mine, and have so many others here.

Oh, and we're all kilt-pushers too.

So, what's your next kilt going to be?

Way to go Lain. My first kilt was a SWK and have been hooked ever since. The BW is a great tartan to have and goes just about anywhere. I now use my BW SWK for hiking. I'm fireplug short and had the kilt hemmed to 22" and I usually wear mine high up with about a 2"rise. Congrats on the kilt. Next thing you'll be doing is ordering kilts on your blackberry form parking lots.

    Lain,

Let me add my congratulations as well. SWK Standards are a truly great introduction to being kilted. Price is reasonable and product quality is high (not to mention Jerry's legendary service).

However, as has been said, the addiction is only beginning. 5 of my 9 kilts are from SWK.

Enjoy, both the kilting and the addiction.

    Cheers,

Cangratulations! Hope to see you kilted sometime in Windsor. I'm a fan of SWK's for a good bang about (and then some) kilt. Last night I went out to dinner with friends in Detroit and I was wearing my SWK Black Stewart with pride. You're right, you get your money's worrth from an SWK.

    Welcome to the addiction!

Funny, my first kilt was a SWR Black Watch Standard!

(I think half the forum started this way!)
