    MacDonald Pleats

I've been mucking about with my Mac Graphic Converter looking at pleating to the stripe options for my impending kilt purchase, but just can't get a handle on what options will serve the sett best.

Could anyone who is able post pics of their Clan Donald kilt pleated to the stripe and tell me why you chose that stripe? I'd appreciate it greatly.

If it's the MacDonald Clanraland, I'd do it to the white stripe.

Clanranald is my primary option at the moment, but I'm wondering if that might be a bit too bold and was looking for some other options.

Interestingly my brother wears a regimental Clan Donald that has military box pleats which he says are not pleated to anything in particular. He's going to send pics so I'll post those when I get them.

personally, I think Clanranald is a little less bold than the standard MacDonald. To my eye, the white lines kind of soften the tartan of all the red.

Most folks feel that the standard MacDonald, having so many prominent but frequent red stripes with no other real dominant stripe, is a difficult on to pleat to stripe, in part becasue of the disappearing stripe phenomenon that occurs when the fell is tapered. Clanranald and Glengarry on the other hand have at least one or more dominant white over checks which can be centered on the pleat well, although the surrounding red stripes, which are still there, will still get lost in the fell with the disappearing stripe phenomenon, just be less obvious. Not that I am saying that pleat a MacDonald to stripe cannot be done, I believe it is done less often becasue of its busy and frequent small red overcheck and the problems that causes in pleating to stripe.

Kiltmakers pipe up here with your opinions, please.

MacDonald, Ministry of Defense, regiment unknown, military box pleat:

    MacDonald of Clanranald, box pleat:

For this box pleat, my workable choices were the red stripes in the blue, or red in the green. The white was not an option for a box pleat (at least, not one I saw ). I went with the red in blue because it worked best with the yardage I was working with.

    That's great Wompet!

The Clan Donald looks to be alternating blue and green, yes? Interesting option. One I hadn't considered. Seems bit unweildy with a 9' sett, which is what the samples I have are. You'd either end up with 2" deep pleats or 6" deep pleats. Is there a tag in that? If so, what does it read?

Is that Clanranald in Lochcarron Strome? If it is, I'm guessing the sett size to be near 7".

The MoD is alternating blue and green, yes - probably due to the military box pleat.
    There is, unfortunately, no label.

The Clanranald is 16 oz., but not Locharron - it was an eBay purchase from another weaver. Unfortunately, that was a couple of years ago, so I don't remember the name.
The sett is almost exactly 7" - good eye.

I just ordered a Macdonald Modern military box pleat from Keltoi last week. John Hart sent me 5 different pleating styles (all of which looked great). I have them saved on my computer but can’t get them to post here for some reason. If you send me your email I'll try to send them to you, or if someone could tell me who to post them here I'll try that.

Also the MOD box pleat you have pictured is from the 2nd Battalion Nova Scotia Highlanders.

    Good looking kilts!
Generally speaking, I tend to favor the darker colors, so the Macdonald MOD is certainly to my liking. I also like, what appears to be, the higher rise. Do you have a front view photo of the kilt you could post, or a link/name of a tartan finder that shows that tartan?. I searched USAKs extensive finder but did not see it there. Thanks for your help.
