    USS Olympia

    Folks, this is serious:

    http://www.fotco.org/

The USS Olympia, the flaghsip of Admiral Dewey at the Battle of Manila Bay in 1898, is in danger of being turned into an artificial reef. Yes, you read that correctly. A historically-important ship is going to be scrapped unless the private organization can raise $10 million dollars by the end of the year.

Please pass this long to your friends and family and help preserve American history.

    T.

Thanks Todd. It is a neat ship, the decks of which I got to walk when my kids and I visited Philadelphia about 7 years ago.

...and to think it is in Philly also home to the S.S. United States, another historic ship that is falling victim to a lack of respect.

The USS Enterprise also got shoddy treatment.

Why isn't the US Government acknowledging Olympia as a National Historic Monument ?

    In a word...money. Congress hasn't any.

IS is currently privately owned? I know that was an issue with the SS United States that over the years various owners have opposed the designation that was supported by other folks as it changes what you can and can not do with the landmark. It is kind of like owning a house in the historic part of Williamsburg, VA there are limits to how you can modify the outside of your house.

It is a shame that it has been allowed to deteriorate so much. The last time I was on it was over 20 years ago, and there were problems then. I had a friend (a blinded veteran) who was very involved with the USS Olympia; I guess a donation in his name would be in order.
