Why fur for formal sporrans?
I'm just going to spit it out... I don't much care for your typical dress sporran. Love the cantles, love the tassels, but I just can't like the fur... I think I'd prefer to wear something leather, even for a white tie event. There's GOT to be a way to avoid that fur look.
Besides, I have allergies.

Have a look at bovine sporrans rather than rabbit, they are hairy as opposed to furry. Much less "in yer face".

There's a Store on ebay called called Carse of Gowrie. Do an advanced search for it and look at some of the bovine dress sporrans he has.
The quality is good too. This is mine with chrome and black enamel cantle.

no reason you couldn't get what you are asking for. Give Turpin at Thorfinn Custom Sporrans a shout. He can take care of you.

Personally, I'd rather something in nicely studded leather for a dress sporran. I have one of the bargain bunny ones in grey that's marginally passable but isn't really in character for me. The very nice hunting sporrans are a bit out of my budget right now, though, so I'll just hang on and rely on ol' "Mr. Fluffy Bunny Wunny" for the time being.
I've thought about stopping in at one of the local leather shops to see what I'd be looking at price-wise to get them to do something in the way of a rather simplified but well-studded sort-of-a-hunting sporran...there is a guy a few doors down from The Duke of Perth.

I'm not big on the horse hair, yak hair, goat hair etc. but I don't mind shorter fur. I too would prefer a really nice leather with a fine finish and texture. But I'm not strictly traditional anyway, as I can't wear most wool. PV is easier to take care of anyway.
Design your own. If you don't have the skills or tools to build it I'm sure there is someone in Chicago who could for a reasonable price. I'd rather have a one-of-a-kind piece that fits my style than the finest high-dollar one that just doesn't suit me.

Here is the sporran I use for formal as I too dislike fur.

These are made by L & M Highland Outfitters in Nova Scotia. They only sell wholesale so you must go through a dealer.

If your in Canada I can order one like this for you. Either of us can have it drop shipped direct.

I apologize. I don't know where I got the idea you were in Chicago. Nevertheless there probably is someone there who could help you...not that it helps you if you're not there.

Ooh, Wizard, me likey. I was under the impression that sort of thing wouldn't pass muster at a black tie event, but I must say, it's a beauty.

MacMillan of Rathdown brought up having seen a silver cantle, velvet evening sporran--in a museum, if I remember correctly.
Sounded like an interesting and unusual sporran.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…
Yes, I have squirrels in my brain…

Fur or hair is traditional, but I would prefer to wear a black all-leather sporran (like the one shown in Steve's post) to a black tie event.
