Tweed Suppliers
Obviously Harris tweed would be the desirable material for a kilt. But what about other tweeds? Which would be suitable for a garment?

Two tweed makers that instantly spring to mind are; Haggarts of Aberfeldy and Johnstons of Elgin. "Google" is your friend.

You know what? Google turned up a mess of upholstery suppliers.

I offer kilts in three different tweed options: Harris Tweed, Ettrick Tweed, and Ardalanish Tweed (organic & ethical tweed from the Isle of Mull).

I am not noted as a computer buff, far from it, but I have just "googled" both and the correct info. came straight up.

Rocky at USAKilts also has tweeds that can be used to make kilts.

I meant when I googled tweed, tweed fabric, tweed by the yard, etc... just wasn't coming up with anything decent. Re: the companies you mentioned, yes, they came up right away. Apologies. And I do use Google quite a bit before I post, in hopes I won't look like a total idiot.
EDIT: I'm sorry if I got a little hot under the collar. I hate it when people tell me to use Google... as if I didn't spend enough time on there already!
Matt, is there a way to purchase the fabric straight from Lochcarron and other mills? Also, if you wanted something a bit cheaper, say in the $20-30/yard range, what would you use? Is there a decent machine-woven tweed?

There is nice tweed available online in that price range or lower. BBlack in Los Angeles has only two listed online, this brown one is on the light side and they don't list weight for the black choice -- but last time I asked about weight for their tartans, I got a quick and precise reply. They are a huge store in the garment district and probably have more than what is shown online.
I've also gotten some nice pieces from eBay sellers but that is more hit and miss. Sometimes it is listed in "collectibles" rather than "craft" category, so I search both.
Proudly Duncan [maternal], MacDonald and MacDaniel [paternal].

Johnstons' cloth is outstanding. Haggarts, I think, no longer weave but merely supply in the same way as Campbells of Beauly or A. Hume in Kelso.
