Need a kilt jacket on a budget

I need a kilt jacket and was considering this one:

It's from the Frugal Corner and is currently on sale with the vest for $190.

I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this coat or could recommend another option in the $200-$275 range that would include a waistcoat.

    Thanks

Check with j.higgins at http://www.jhiggins.net/sf_catproduc...CBB5FSVSJD646L. I think you'll find something comparabke from a very dependable vendor.

I haven't had any personal dealings with Frugal Corner, but others on this site have had quite a few. They may be fine, but jhiggins is definitely A-OK. I don't wish to make bad statements about a vendor, but others have, so be very careful.

I haven't checked USA Kilts lately, but Rocky had a sale going on with vest and jacket. At least you know he has quality stuff made in Scotland. I bought one recently and it was made by St. Kilda. Not sure about the quality of jacket from the Frugal Corner. Good luck with your decision!

    Check J. Higgins, too.

I have two lovely and well built Argyll jacket/waistcoat combos' from JHiggins.net, one in black barathea and one in charcoal tweed. Love them both and have no issues with them, but the combo is a bit more expensive, at or just above the top of your range. They may cut you a discount if you order more stuff along with it.

St Kilda Kilts has a clearence on what they call a Holyrood jacket and waistcoat, basically a Brian Boru set, the irish equivalent to the scottish Prince Charlie. They are like a little over $100 for the set, if they still have it in your size. Alittle more formal thatn the Argyll style you show but still a lovely look, and well made.

    FM,

Thanks for the hint on St Kilda. They have a Tweed Argyll on sale as well.

One for question for the masses, I typically wear a 46R-48R depending on the coat. I know the stuff with UK sizing tend to run small.....will I be OK you think with a 48R or should I jump up to a 50R?

    Pete, I think a 48 would suffice!

I am an american 50 extra long, and I generally do okay with a 52 long or extra long in UK products.

The UK jackets tend to be tailored at the waist a bit more than US. That's one reason for the conventional wisdom of ordering up a size.

Have you tried ebay, particularly ebay.co.uk? Search for "kilt jacket" and see what you come up with.

If you are buying "off the peg" (ie: ready to wear) I'd most definitely suggest going up one size-- you can always have it taken in a bit if necessary once it arrives, but it will be virtually impossible to have it let out if it is too tight (there is not enough seam allowence in mass-produced jackets). Something else to bear in mind is that kilt jackets at the bottom end of the market are usually indifferently tailored from sometimes inferior materials-- most are made in the Far East, that's why they are so cheap-- and rarely hold up for more than a year or two if worn regularly.

I like your choice of jacket style, by the way, and hope you can find the size and quality you are looking for in your price range.

    Best of luck,

    MoR
