    Rob Roy problem

I have a lovely brown "Rob Roy" sporran that I bought on ebay, in this style: http://www.scottishtradingcompany.co...products_id=49.

Although it has enough room to hold a goodly bunch of stuf, I find that it tends to "gape". In other words, the braided leather cords don't keep it closed, and I am continuously hoitching it up to keep it from spreading open.

Does anyone have some advice on how to deal with this?
    Cheers,
    John

do you have a shot of your bag with the flap up? It might help to see what's going on underneath.

The only thing I could think of, without seeing how, in particular, THIS bag sinches, is that perhaps you need to gently knot the drawstring??

That is what I was thinking but figured there may be something preventing this being the solution. I don't know, like you suggested perhaps pics would help.

I dont claim to know anything , but couldnt you put some small o-rings around the drawstring? when you cinch it up the o-rings would hold the string in place......just my 2 cents.

That's a good idea, but the problem would be that the tassels make it hard to put an o-ring (or a wooden/horn toggle) onto the braided leather drawstring. I think my only option is to add a constricting leather reinforcement washer to the inside of the bag at the two sides where the braided cord emerges. This could be done by slitting, glueing, and stitching the reinforcement in place.

    A bit o' metal maybe?

SWMBO has many Purses Of Unusual Size, some of which are built like your Rob Roy.
They feature either the stitched leather tube style cord lock, or spring-loaded metal, like this
which will entail some work to install, but would be very easy and secure to use.
You might find something similar on a bag in the discount/clearance/remaindered bins...

I use a cord lock on my rob roy style and it is most convienent. Granted, I built the sporran myself and decided to use nylon cord, vice leather. (leather is a great structural material but tends to crack and degrade when used to cinch a bag in my experience). It shouldnt be all that difficult to dissassemble the tassels and reassable them with basic tools/glues if you wanted to go that route.

I use the cord lock but you are correct, the tassel will be a problem getting it on.

You could run another thinner cord through the same holes and attach a cord lock to that, there by making the other tassel cord simply ornamental. The second cord might be hidden under that flap.

If you can stand to live without the 3rd pair of tassels, just remove them and pull the cord up under the flap with the cord lock. Probably not preferred, but an option.
