    My Son's First Day Kilted

From the time I started occasionally wearing the Kilt my four year old son has expressed an interest in getting a kilt of his own. My wife was reluctant at first, but after the local Highland Games where he tried a few on (all too large) she decided it would be cute.

I'm not Scottish (or as I like to put it, I'm as Scottish as Prince Albert), my wife is 1/2 Irish. She thought it might be nice to get him the Irish national tartan.

We ordered the closest size to fitting from Stillwater. Needless to say, Jerry had it to us in about 36 hours. The velcro waistband provided the best fit we could hope for without a bespoke kilt. My son's problem is that he's always been in the one hundredth percentile for height, but about fourty-eighth for weight. He's taller than many six year olds but SKINNY.

About a week ago I scored a child sized day sporran on eBay. I wasn't going to have time before the state Highland Games to make the skunk fur sporran he wanted, and I got a great price on this one.

It arrived on Wednesday. Luckily it didn't get snagged in customs, because it turned out to be s3@l skin.

When he opened the packet, he immediately wanted to try everything on.
He picked out a different shirt from the one he was wearing. First, he selected a blue paisley, but then decided on the shirt below.
As I was helping him get dressed he took off his shorts and sandals. He looked at me and said "I think I should take off my underpants too".

It was all I could do not to burst out laughing, I told him "no" and he said it again, "I really think I should take off my underpants".

I'm not sure where it came from, he's never asked me about what I wear under the kilt... But it's good to know he's got the right instinct.

In the end, I won. He's just too young- he has a bit of 'streaker' in him, and the kilt is too light-weight for regimental wear. Plus, the giggles and mischief that would ensue when he discovered the 'tear away' velcro fastening and no pants would get EVERYONE in hot water

The sporran fits very well, although I still need to make a kilt belt for him. The kilt itself is a little long, since he's growing like a weed. He's got a TON of belly-room, it's wrapped to it's tightest point.

Without further ado, my little devil in his kilt.

You can see he has no fear of 'matching patterns' we've all discussed lately in the tattersal threads.

    Doing his best "Panache" impression

After wearing it around for a few minutes he said "You should wear one of your kilts too, Daddy", so I got suited up.

My wife was out for the evening, so we had a great kilted father-son evening.

But he's already trying to bogie my brand new X-Marks clan badge that I wear as a kilt pin!

Wonderful! The sporran and kilt go well together, and it’s great to see someone that young kilted.
