I'd go with the grey sporran on a black themed kilt
Order of the Dandelion, The Houston Area Kilt Society, Bald Rabble in Kilts, Kilted Texas Rabble Rousers, The Flatcap Confederation, Kilted Playtron Group.

You could always wear a black sporran with a black shirt, black tie, black jacket of some sort, black hat, maybe a black goatee and some black eyeliner to boot, some Poe in the breast pocket and an iDevice under one arm, with high-laced Doc Martins (in black, of course)...but then you will potentially be mistaken for either an undertaker, a funeral attendee, a scotgoth, a young & rebellious son of Regis Philbin, or that <flamebait> from American Idol...so personally I wouldn't recommend it.
So unless you're one of those Scottish Ninjas mentioned in the "sgian dubh as a weapon" thread...
I think you're on the right track with the cowhide, but take a look at tan & tan with mottling. It would look great over the black kilt with a brass cantle as well, and while you may find some people faint at the idea of a brass cantle for evening wear, they're probably already flat on the floor over the monochromatic theme so wgasa. Try this on...brass cantle on a tan cowhide sporran, with either white or dark reddish-brown tassels. Not too much red, though.
That'll give you the opportunity to move away from the black socks with black flashes at some point, should you feel like it. A black-based sock with an Argyll pattern using colors echoed in the hide and leather on the sporran would look really good, particularly with a non-Argyll top, so would a charcoal colored sock with a top in either Argyll or some other pattern, same idea...tan, white, black, dark red yarn. Could even keep the black flashes, or go with red, or something that picks up on (not necessarily matches) your shirt, tie, cufflinks, whatever. It will look smokin', classy but subdued, and it will not look at all like it was purchased from a kilt hire agency. The socks would be a custom order, of course, but there are many people who can do that type of work, also the sporran, but I am having a helluva time finding anyone willing to build a brass cantle.
