Prom Kilted?
Hello Ladys and Gents!
I have been thinking seriously about wearing kilt to prom. Do you think this would be appropriate?
And, if I was to wear a kilt, would a Stillwater Heavyweight in Blackwatch tartan be appropriate. I have a causual kilt, and no formal accessories, so I would probably rent the rest of the outfit.

Absolutely. Kilts and proms are perfect together. Wish I had found kilts when I went to prom.

I wore a kilt to my grad and my only regret is that Xmarksthescot didn't exist at that time... having this site as a resource would have really helped to put together the outfit

Sounds like a good idea to me. However, be prepared for a possible battle of resentment from the administration. I know we had a member here who had an uphill battle with his school administration over his wanting to wear his kilt to prom. I don't mean to discourage you in any way, my only intent is to make you aware of a possible situation before hand so that you can be prepared if questioned about it. I certainly hope it all works out well with your plans, I'm sure you'll look very sharp in your kilt.

Thanks for the encouragement everyone!
@Standard, thank you for the warning! I was a little worried, and will check with the school to make sure. I did a quick google search on "kilted at prom" and a whole slew of "student denied right to wear kilt to prom" or "student suspended from school" came up. I'll make sure and check to avoid this.
Anymore thoughts on a Stillwater Heavyweight? Obviously it will not be a tank, but from what I've heard they can be dressed up to a farly formal level.

Prom kilted would be great, but check prom dress code
I echo everybody else's enthusiastic "go kilt"! But I also urge you, as Standard has, to immediately check with the principal of the school regarding a prom dress code. Many schools have them and they are, uh, [kindly put] often unbelievably narrow-minded if not downright straitjacketing. And, some administrations simply refuse out of hand to hear anything other than what they deem appropriate. Now, if you come from a progressive school district, it's great. If you don't, don't be surprised or take it personally if it's not possible to budge the school administrators. The folks who may refuse you your kilt are usually the ones not necessarily interested in ethnic awareness or any other sensible argument; they're unfortunately out for their own necks and to dissuade students from nonconformity of any sort. It's not your fault if you aren't allowed the kilt for prom.
'Nuff said. Go talk with the Powers that Be and let us know what you find out.
Good Luck!

An Aged Curmudgeon Speaks Out...
Sure. Wear it. You will need to rent the following items:
Prince Charlie coatee & waistcoat and a dress sporran.
You can either buy or rent a formal shirt; that said, a plain white shirt will do as well. You will need a black bow tie, if one isn't provided by the company you rent the Prince Charlie coatee from. (Formal shirts can be purchased from your local Pennys store.)
You will need to buy a pair of dark green or dark blue hose.
You will also need a pair of black shoes-- I'd suggest you buy a simple pair of black oxfords (not wingtips) because these will be a little more useful if you are going on to college. (cool as all-black Chucks are, they just don't cut it for pom wear with a kilt)
Have a good time at the prom.

I have 2 things to add to the above advice. First off,
Second- as to a battle with administration, I am of the opinion that it's better to ask for forgiveness than permission. Don't mention it, don't make an issue out of it beforehand, just show up at your prom in a traditional and well turned out outfit, being as polite and respectful as possible.
Oh, and kilts are appropriate at any and all formal occasions, in the same way that Armani is. I would suggest you show us pictures of your outfit before prom and get some feedback, if that's possible. We are a helpful lot!!
