It just seems funny.

I am currently living in France and, I might add, proudly wearing regularly my Hunting Stewart Kilt.

I recently saw (on this site, I think) some photo's of someone dressed in a Maple Leaf tartan kilt. I think that this tartan looks great and would really like to buy and wear one myself, but it just seems funny to be thinking about buying and wearing a kilt which represents a country which I have absolutely no ties to except for a short visit a loooong time ago.

What do you all think?

That's the thing- it may not be official like the Colorado State, but it is an idealistic relation. It's the ideal that makes it feel weird, kinda like wearing a tartan to which you have no clan or family relation. We all know that the whole clan tartan thing is an invention of the 1800's and not at all historical, but it just feels a little dishonest.

If you like it, wear it. I purchased one through B&S and it is one of my favourites to wear.
The colours are fantastic. Photos dont do it justice.

If it feels funny, don't do it. There are plenty of other options!

That being said, there are no restrictions on the Maple Leaf tartan and, as has been mentioned already, it is not yet an official Canadian tartan.

Why not wear a Breton tartan instead? These digital images don't do them justice but worth looking into...

Many with French ancestry in Canada, particularly the province of Quebec and New Brunswick. Also many Canadian soldiers from the great wars buried in France. By all means go ahead.

For those unaware of the differences between Parisian and Quebecois French, I kid you not! They are unintelligible to each other!

Not exactly. At one time, the Maple Leaf tartan was intended to be a "universal" tartan for the Canadian forces. The Pipes & Drums of the Royal Canadian Regiment wear the tartan to this day:

I don't have a problem wearing them. They are fashion rather than true district tartans according to the Scottish Register which makes it all the easier, not that I need an excuse.

More on the Maple Leaf Tartan here. I'll get around to Maple Leaf someday. I've liked that one too, ever since I saw it worn by Alex from Hawick.

The Bro Leon, another Brittany Tartan, is also on my wish list (as worn here by Hamish).
