    Welsh love spoon

Having read Jamies thread about the retirment of the little airship, I must say that it was an honour to have hosted it here in Wales and on the odd few adventures I was able to take it on. But things move on and times have changed and I know the little ship will be well cared for at either Jamies or Hams.
So .... I putting this in the pot ... I have a gorgeous WELSH LOVESPOON here that I am prepared to send off on a similar trip if anyone is interested in letting it take on a voyage. It will represent a bit o welshness, love, peace and goodwill to all xmarks members.
So ... what do you reckon.

Sounds like a good idea to represent the 'new' XMTS generation!

    Great idea Derek.
Years ago I took Ann on a Christmas shopping weekend to Cardiff. While she was in a shop I bought a Welsh love spoon from a street vendor and had our names burnt onto it.

For a few years it hung on the wall of what was then our bedroom.
One day the spoon fell off the wall. I didn't notice until I stood on it and broke the tip of the spoon. Soon afterwards Ann's health failed and she had to go into full time nursing care.

    And or ??

A very nice gesture Derek, and it got me thinking. Perhaps, if we are going to divert from something Scottish it should be representative of our multi-cultural/multi-national membership.

How about a culturally significant, or representative, item from each receiving party being sent to the next party?

In other words, something unique to Wales, like a Welsh Love Spoon, sent to South Africa for a "visit". Something unique to South Africa sent to Japan, something unique to Japan sent to Finland etc. with a similar photo essay along each leg of the trip, as we had with the Saltire and with the receiving party keeping their "gift" from abroad as a memento.

With each new leg of the journey we could all look forward to finding out both what the new "Emissary" was and where it was sent!

    What do you think ?

    Best regards,

    Broooke

    Thumbs up

I think that is a very good idea, and would bring the members closer together.

Just to throw my suggestion into the ring, a hornby model of the "Flying Scotsman". My only concern would be the weight issue, as raised by Rocky on another thread.

My other thought is that whatever becomes the international traveller becomes the property of the forum members as a whole and that if the donor(s) leaves then the object continues it's intended role.

In theory, I think it's a cool idea... Especially being that I live in Japan and would certainly have some interesting contributions to send. However, in practice I think this may not work quite as intended, due to the fact that there IS inevitably a very high concentration of XMTS rabble from N. America, and many from the same city/state/province.

As such, I think they would get a bit short-changed if, say one XMarker got a really cool Japanese throwing star, shipped from across the ocean, and the next Xmarker got a souvenir that he/she could've just driven a half hour to get themselves...

The proportion of items sent/received from outside U.S. and Canada would be disproportionately low, I think, to make it work quite that way. Although, perhaps we can incorporate your idea somehow in a somewhat different way.

For example... What if we still had just ONE item that would get sent around the world, but to which things could get appended.... Like for instance, a small, uniquely Japanese keychain or cellphone dangly thing... That way, it still remains light enough for reasonable shipping costs, but those of us who live in unusual locales can make an interesting contribution... But of course, including a logbook with photos and whatnot would be a given.

I posted a couple of suggestions in the "Suggestions" forum in regards to such a project... Here's a cross-link to that post to avoid duplication.
