Question Kale – A Scottish soul food?

Growing up in the south (USA) greens was a mainstay of my diet. But until today, I didn’t realize that kale was a Scottish soul food, too!

Well how about that. Thanks for the lesson.

    We're having spinach tonight.

I remember seeing that before sometime (can't remember when or where)... but yum! I love kale! Hmmm... I think I need to have kale sometime soon. We love to sautee it with a bit of soy sauce, lots of garlic, and then put some sliced tomato in at the very end. *drooools*

Pleater was discussing the use of overgrown, bolted cabbages for walking canes the other day, so you never know...

Ah, the brassicas and their many uses.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

Kale is 'hardy,' I'll give it that. I know that from trying to chew it. How long do you have to cook the stuff, exactly?

Kale or curly greens, grown in every farm and cottar garden, were usually boiled with a fleshy bone, then mashed till smooth with a hoggin of cream, a lump of butter and a good sprinkle of freshly ground black spice. This was something to remember, and the bree made wonderful brose!

I might have to add that as another side dish for the next time I make a traditional Scottish dinner.

We buy canned greens named Glory Foods; they have all greens already cooked. I like mixed greens best, but all are very good.

Kale is good to mix into veggie juices. It makes carrot juice taste like bananas.

    How strange.
I wonder if the same effect comes from wrapping a carrot in Kale. I eat a carrot for brunch every morning, but don't do the juice thing.

There's a good way to find out.
