Black Watch sgian from Ebay

I picked up this sgian on Ebay last week.

The condition of the brass and wood is excellent. Nearly all the leather is gone from the sheath, leaving the bare pale wood showing. The blade has some discolouration but little or no pitting.

Most interesting are the inscriptions.

On the sgian itself are the initials M.G.

On the back of the sheath is engraved
with all my love darling from Daphne June 27 1940
Here it is!

I polished up the brass; it was very tarnished.

(Note: I discovered that this is a Cameron Highlanders sgian, not Black Watch.)

I like things with stories behind them.

Although we will probably never know any more of the story than you've just related.

You are lucky in the USA; over the other side of the pond ebay no longer sells knives of any sort due to our laws so we cannot pick pick up anything like this.

Wow no dirks or sginean at all? Bummer! Very recently there were two magificent dirks up on Ebay. There's a wonderful sterling mounted sgian up there now.

About the inscription on this sgian, note the way the date is written. Doesn't this suggest The Cameron Highlanders of Canada?

I would agree with that date observation. Not written like that this side of the pond.

That is a gem. Above and beyond it being a fine looking sgian it has a history that sends chills down my spine. 1940, deep into WWII. All I thought when I read your post was the song Green Fields of France (the link is the Dropkick Murphys version). I know it is WWI but the sentiment does not change,
