    Just One Whisk(e)y

I'm branching this from the thread about collections because it's such a different approach.

To everyone else, a question: if there could be only one whisk(e)y for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?

That's a toughie, but being a Kentuckian born & bred, I'd have to say Maker's Mark.

These are my impressions (from memory 'cause it's been awhile):
It's got a nice aroma, full of almond and vanilla.
The taste is smooth, a little buttery, and you get a little hint of oak.
The finish is also nice and smooth, nothing bitter or sharp to it.

It's stands just fine by itself, though you could mix it with other things (but who would want to?).

Before this thread takes off I think I need to explain my apparent lack of imagination here!I have spent a lifetime testing and retesting various brands of whiskys, some were alright, some were good, a few suited my palate perfectly. As we all know tastes can vary depending, on what we have eaten, whether we have just had a good / bad cigar, our mood, our age ,direction of the wind ,position of the moon etc., so what tasted stunning yesterday may not taste quite so stunning today.

Since my bit of an accident a couple of years ago, I now wear dentures which undoubtedly affect my taste, plus I have some pretty tired(damaged?), abused and distinctly aged taste buds, so my taste of many things, including whisky, have changed pretty radically. I know Talisker of old with its powerful tastes---I don't do subtle tastes, or scents any more----so these days Talisker is the one that suits me and I have learned to "trust" its taste. Its is that simple and I am afraid I have to make do with that and that is fine by me, as the option does not look too encouraging!

Funny you should ask, CMcG! I've put some thought into this, and my answer is Highland Park. Even though I like to drink many whiskies, if I had to choose one and only one to drink for the rest of my life, this would be it. Lagavulin, Talisker, Laphroaig - the list of my favourites goes on, but the one whisky that seems to best fit my taste, most of the time, would be Highland Park.

Highland Park is a perfect "All Rounder" - I can't think of an occasion where it wouldn't be welcome.

That being said, I personally would go for something aggressive - Lagavulin or Laphroig. The first time I ever had an Islay malt, I said to myself "what is this smokey, iodine-laden, angel tear doing in a bottle? It needs to be free... by way of my mouth!"

Isle of Jura. It's not exacly a "taste" thing, just that I find many other whiskys over "fiery". My normal tipple is wine, so I'm used to taking a generous mouthful, rather than the cautious sip, which would be more prudent...

Now, now, that's not fair. You can only pick ONE!

You're not alone because a buddy of mine -- who is not an Xmarker -- says the same thing about Jamieson's. Hopefully this thread will provide you with a few other suggestions...

If I was marooned on a desert island with a case of only one type of whisky, I would want that to be Aberlour A'bunadh. But I would hope that a bottle of Auchentoshan washed up on the beach just once.

Now if I was marooned on that island with Jock Scot I would be more than happy if the case was of Talisker. But still hoping a bottle of Auchentoshan washed up on the beach.

I had to pull out my notes from the last scotch tasting I went to. My choice would be MACALLAN 30year. It has a nose that makes me drool. To my taste it has a nice chocolatey orange hint that reminds me of Terry's chocolate orange my mom use to buy it also has a touch of a coffee-ish follow through. The sherry cast they use also ads it's own sweat flavors. With all that candy store sweetness it powers through with the pure fiery scotch element that we all love too. It's just well balanced and great with everything from steak to game birds to a nice meat pie. H3ll I'd have it with my Irish oats in the morning!
