A Buchannon of some kind? Is the size description accurate per ruler?

Another question that springs to mind while trawling for images, is there a right way up and a wrong way up for the Buchanan tartan? Or doesn't it matter?

It's indeed a version of the Buchanan.

There is no 'right' way for the pattern and whether the colour blocks run Green-Red-Yellow from left to right or right to left depends on which way around, i.e. which side, is used as the face. Traditionally it would not have mattered as the cloth was not finished with a good face as it is today.

I suspect that that how the pattern runs in today's cloth will vary from mill to mill. The one determinant on Rapier woven cloth that has a turned and glued edge will be which side the fold is one as this will (should) mean that the cloth can only be used one way around.

The ruler appears to be 18 inches long. If that is the case the width is about 17 inches outside to outside with buckles in the center holes. That is assuming the kilt is stretched as flat as possible. Seems to me the inside dimension might be less but then again the tartan forms an arc and the ruler is straight. So 34 inches seems as good a guess as any. The length appears to be 18 plus about 5 or 23 inches. Either of these dimensions could easily be off by an inch or more.

I agree... I was going to type the same thing McElmurry typed before I read his post. Looks about 33" - 34" (+/-) waist and about 23" length (21" drop + 2" rise). The tartan is Buchanan Modern.

Due to the shaping on the front apron (seen in the buckle picture), it looks to be hand sewn. Also, due to the apparent size of the twill, I'd guess (and it's an educated guess, but still a guess) it's 13 oz, not 16.

Another thought (and as a kiltmaker I've found this universally true)... since it is asymmetrical, if you take 8 yards double width to make two kilts and use the face of each kilt, one will run green, red, yellow and the other will run yellow, red, green. The only way for them both to run the same direction is:

1. Use the "bad side" for one of them
2. hem one
3. use 16 yards single width

Bottom line is that it doesn't matter which way it runs... it's still Buchanan.
