    About to start an X-Kilt

    Hi all,

I'm about to start an xKilt. It's my first. I don't really have any questions -- just wanted to share.

I'm going to make it from 12 oz blue denim (100% cotton) and sew with Levi's color thread. I have a week and a half until Grandfather Mountain. I hope I get it done in time.

I have a black cotton twill kilt already (no brand name) that I bought in Texas. It's OK, but I think I'm going to like the xKilt even better. I notice that my black kilt has a number of pockets and other features that contribute a lot of extra material. I think the xKilt is going to be a lot sleeker.

I plan on buying the material tonight on my way home.

    Later!

If you don't have any experience sewing, starting off with contrasting color thread may not be the best idea. Every little wiggle in your stitch lines will jump out at you -- nobody else may notice, but you will LOL

But then I'm also one for jumping in with both feet (my first ever knitting project was a pair of kilt hose) so go for it and show us how wrong I can be!

    Hi,

Thanks! I've actually done some sewing, including a fleece Inverness cape. Mostly I've done repairs and stuff, but I replaced a zipper on a pair of chinos, which impressed my Mom.

This will be the first time I've used contrasting tread. But I have a pretty good machine (an old Pfaff) and I'm real whiz with a seam ripper Now if I needed button holes I might be in trouble. I put them in my Inverness cape and they didn't come out well. But Velcro I can handle!

Good luck with your new project! I'm excited for you and will live vicariously through you and this thread until I can muster up the courage to make my own.

I got the fabric yesterday, washed it and dried it. Probably do that again tonight, since it's denim.

When I was at the fabric store the girl cutting asked what I was going to do with it, and I told her I was going to make a kilt, and she said she had made several. I kind of didn't pay attention to that, except then she asked if I was going to make it with box pleats.

You never know who you'll run into.

Almost done. I have all the pleats sewn in and the tapers pinned & fitted. I can probably finish it tonight. I'm taking some photos along the way and I'll post in the DIY showcase when it's done.
