ReadyTo Try Making A Kilt Or Two
Things are about to get real dangerous around here. Blue digicam practice material is on hand. Tartan is on order. Unearthed, cleaned, and tuned "the beast" and hemmed a thrifty kilt to test it out. Printed Alan's instructions. Barb just confirmed that her book is on the way. Made a hole in the living room and picked up a new desk for a designated sewing station. All I need to do now is learn the wife how to use the beast.

I'm already feeling the tremors of a new addiction starting. This isn't going to be pretty, but I'm pretty sure it's gonna be a lot of fun.

There's no feeling quite like when people compliment you on the kilt you're wearing and you get to say "Thanks! I made it myself."
I made a couple of kind of mostly unwearable kilts before I really felt that I got a good, solid kilt (the lining was too tight, and I didn't like the pleat order on the first, and I didn't taper the waist on either of them)
So find a fabric with a similar hang to your tartan and make a mock up first, if you're not planning on going page-by-page out of a guide - figuring it out by trial and error with nice tartan could bring a man to tears.
But when you get it right... Feels good, man.

I remember thinking that I'd "make one or two." That was 35 kilts ago, and the fabric hamper seems to keep filling up. ![Laughing](http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif)
Remember, you were warned.
But I agree completely with NeightRG, there is no feeling like getting a compliment on one you made yourself.

I made my first practice attempt on cheap "tartanesque" fabric from Hancock Fabrics. I wouldn't even recommend that. If you want something easy to work with yet still somewhat easy on the pocketbook, order some PV from Marton Mills. 4 meters should do the trick. You may even get lucky and find that the particular tartan you've ordered has a selvedge. It's all downhill from here. Welcome to the madness.

That's great mate, I literally just made a revk kilt with the same material.
I think it looks great, so I'm sure yours will look outstanding.....
Welcome to the party and here's to hoping you make many more..
