Today's kilt comments when out and about
Today I was walking through this mall downtown and saw a jewelry vendor I recognized from another market so I stopped and said 'hi'. Soon after, this woman came up and mentioned she noticed I was in a kilt. She said her husband had been born in Glasgow and had worn a kilt almost all the time.
That was a nice meeting.
I left them and walked into a "Dollar Store" and as I had barely made it 12 feet passed this family of a man, woman and teenage daughter, I heard the mother say (in a far too loud voice)
"what the @#%& was that"
(you can fill in the best expletive that fits those four spaces)
I could hear the man saying "it's a kilt" (at least he knew)
How can a grown woman get through her entire life in Nova Scotia and apparently not have ever seen at least a picture or video on the news of a kilt.
Anyway, I couldn't believe she just blurted out what she did in a store ... I guess she didn't think she was as loud as she actually was.

Re: Today's kilt comments when out and about
Actually, one of my favourite comments came just last Saturday from a fellow I've known for a while, but who hasn't known me kilted. He looked me up and down, looked me right in the eye, and pointing, said, "Nice shoes."

Oh my! Perhaps he is unfamiliar with just what that means in street slang.

Love your Dollar Store lady...must have a shortage of that brain chemical that tells you when to speak and when to keep your mouth shut...Tourettes cases have that problem.
Try wearing one in the supermarket in my "Old Irish" neighborhood here...of course their idea of Irish traditional dress is khaki's, one of those Irish fisherman sweaters and a Notre Dame tam (worn at a rakish angle, of course).
I can't believe it was Nova Scotia, though...

So am I. Is this something I should be concerned about?

You can't help or avoid what others are going to say about you either to your face or behind your back. Take the high road, as you did, and remember, 'Sticks and stones..."

Re: Today's kilt comments when out and about
I was at a Chruch ( Trunk or Treat ) last Saturday for all the Local kid's and was handing out candy , I was dressed up in My Kilt and fly plaid.
I looked very nice and respectfull for where I was at.
But ,I could not belive the thing's people were saying to me and about me in front of there kid's .-- All the normal ? like what do I wear under my Kilt and so on. I was enbearised for the children.
So I just commented back --" OH ,I have not heard that one"
As not to stir the crowd for the children's sake.
My wife and I work with the children in the youth minstery and love children
and Love God . But people do not understand -Heritage in the South
They think everyone should be dress in deer hunting clothe's and have no idea about were they came from.
So I have found that when people do not understand something they will do one of two thing's - Laugh at it or attack it - We are more then that.
