Anyone has a Sport kilt
I like to know if Sport Kilt is a good kilt for everyday and hiking in the hot summer. Looking for an Olive in the Specialty fabric they offer on their site.
Best regards Yves

Re: Anyone has a Sport kilt
I can verify that my Sport Kilt is the coolest kilt I have for hot weather.
Make sure you order the sewn down pleats, though. AFAIK they don't hold their shape well without that option.
Not sure if the olive drab kilt is the same fabric as the tartan ones, though? I have looked at that one, but I would rather have some sort of 'Irish' green.
I do have a Frugal Corner kilt in their lightweight acryllic in dark green, which is almost as cool as a Sport Kilt, because it's very thin (but bear in mind that most other acryllic kilts are too warm for hot weather use). However, that isn't available with pockets, and Sport Kilts are.
Tartanista and Kilt Mart both now have green (not olive) kilts with cargo pockets, and I am very tempted. Of course, for all I know you actually prefer olive and could care less about pockets. Ignore me, I'm rambling, LOL!
ETA: And Amerikilt have dark green kilts with front (detachable cloth sporran) and back pockets, but no pockets at the sides, but that's not my cup of tea. Also, there are scores of kilt vendors with olive cargo kilts, but Sport Kilt remains a good choice, and they offer not only cargo pockets, but also slit pockets, and let you choose either or both types of pocket or neither, for various prices.

Re: Anyone has a Sport kilt
i have a sport kilt, and it is very good for hiking! the light weight material is great so that it doesn't weigh you down after a long hike, especially in warm weather. *** on the sewn down pleats! i have seen them with out and the don't look much like kilts, more like skirts and im sure you dont want that. and they are easy to take care of, just keep it hung up with a clip style clothes hanger, you can even toss them in the washer and dyer, no special care needed! i have even "dressed mine up" are worn it with a prince charlie jacket for burns dinner, which most people say you can't really do with a sport kilt but it totally works, of course it definitely looks different next to a wool kilt.

You can always go to UTKilts.com. I have two of these. They're great quality for the price. The pleats are sewn all the way down. This is the olive deluxe.

Re: Anyone has a Sport kilt
I have two SportKilts. They are lightweight and pretty good for an "everyday, I don't care whats going to happen to it" kilt. The fabric is prone to pilling (or whatever the term is for small raised bumps in the fabric from wear). However, once I picked up a wool kilt, I've not been tempted by the SportsKilt again.

Re: Anyone has a Sport kilt
I own a Sportkilt, and I use it for running in, when the situation demands it. I don't consider it as one of my go-to kilts, though. Too flimsy! So, my recommendation is that a Sportkilt is adequate for sports, (hence the name, I suppose!) but it lacks the substance and durability of a solidly built kilt, either modern OR traditional. Of course there are reasonably priced wool kilts out there that would be great hikers. If you're put off by the idea of hiking in wool, might I recommend one of the modern versions of the warrior's garment? I've done a fair bit of hiking in my Utilikilts. Their 'Mocker' and "Survival" models are light enough for hiking while being plenty durable against sticks and brush and whatnot.

I had a sport kilt long ago, honestly if you want PV and something to use with outdoor activities, I'd recommend USA kilt. PV will be great with heat and will look nice enough to use casually.

I have a Sportkilt but mostly use it around and about the house for its comfort. Would the (tartan) Sportkilts' fabric get pulled by brambles and stickers on the trail? This was alway my concern. I lean to Mountain Hardwear's Elkommando Kilt and olive Amerikilt for hiking.

I agree with Nick.
My first kilt was a Sport KIlt, purchased at a Celtic Festival because it was my family tartan and it was before knowing about this forum. After finding this forum and learning about Casual PV kilts from USA Kilts, my second kilt was ordered from USAK, made to my measurements.
The Sport Kilt "pilled-up" from my sporran after a few wearings. I trashed it and replaced my family tartan Sport Kilt with a family tartan USAK casual PV kilt and an universal tartan in a single order.
I highly recommend USAK Casual PV kilts. I'm very happy with the three and would order another, but I now have four other kilts (3 wool and a PV Xmarks the Scot tartan Freedom kilt) Seven kilts are enough for now.

Have a Hawaiian tartan works Sport Kilt that just got to spend a couple weeks on Maui. Great for hiking to the beach in the warm weather there, but it still stood up to the test of being worn to the pub on Celtic night. Very comfortable, very casual feel. Plus it came off far more gracefully than shorts and looked great hanging on a tree branch at that one particular beach...
