Are caubeens made of unicorn hide?

I'm interested in finding a caubeen, preferably the 'real deal.' I've looked at JBayous website and I'm not sure I want to go that route; I'd rather find one from one of the military suppliers. (UK, Canada, etc) I've had bad experiences in the past, and being a retired military man myself, I'm partial to gear that's rugged enough for use by young warriors. I did a search of XMTS, but not too much material out there popped up...

Anyone have a reliable contact that is able to source an issue caubeen or something reasonably close?

    Thanks!!

    -Brad

Have you tried the attached blog site? It is a bit dated but there is a reference to "What price glory?"

Re: Are caubeens made of unicorn hide?

Seanmadra, I did see that thread, and I've looked at whatpriceglory.com, but I didn't see anything that looked appropriate. Also, I've perused eBay, and they do have a few listings, but I didn't see anything that said "this is the one!" I'm wondering if there are any XMTS members out there who're members of the British or Canadian armed forces who'd be willing to help out a retired U.S. Marine find something more...official?

All of my in-store headwear come from these folks.

    http://www.glengarryhats.com/otherhats.php

    Excellent quality and good prices.

the Irish Caubeen here is very close to issue. The issue ones are a bit thinner and do not have the round rosette.

Now, a note from Jackson. The Canadian forces who wear this simply call it a tam. It is actually a caubeen but depending on which unit you are in it is worn differently. One way of wearing it is to shape it till it is all down in the front about like a flat cap. For the other style the soldiers buy them about two sizes too small and then shape them till they are almost beret type skullcaps.

Wizard: how's the quality? Do the folks at glengarryhats.com provide a caubeen that's 'substantial?' How would their products compare to...say...a Mackie balmoral, for instance?

I bought a regimental tam off e-bay a couple of weeks ago. I know some businesses like the Celtic Croft now offer them new. I know it's not a caubeen, but if you remove the toorie, they don't look much different. They are the issued regimental tams.

I am very pleased with the quality from Glengarry caps. I used to sell Mackey Balmorals until I found these folks.

I did a side by side comparison with the Mackey balmorals I had in the shop and actually like the Glengarry Caps better. I like that they feel more 'substantial'. I also like the ribben treatment better than Mackey. My personal Balmoral is from Glengarry Caps.

Re: Are caubeens made of unicorn hide?

My balmoral came from Glengarry as well and I was very impressed with the quality. Much nicer than what sells in our local shop, and less expensive. Very sturdy and solid. I almost got a caubeen from them, but they don't have one in a color that I like.

Steve, your endorsement carries weight. I'll give them a look.
