Making a Kilt for my son
My son has a project at school and I need to make him a kilt because the country that he has chosen was Ireland. I was just wondering how much material I needed to buy. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you so much.

Welcome from the highlands of Central Massachusetts. First thing is to get a copy of Barb Tewksbury's book. http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/members/barb-t-/ Contact her for the nearest copy.

Another option is a box-pleated machine stitched XKilt, a link to free instructions can be found here.

Here's a link to a real quickie set of insructions:

...nothing like the in depth business of The Art Of Kiltmaking but certainly a quick and dirty how to.
Then there's this from the notorious Troop 7...maybe doing a Great Kilt or an Ancient Kilt thing would make do for ya'.

Convenient for all, here's the master page for all of those Troop 7 projects.

Really, for a school project, this is the way to go and you can't go wrong with info from the Scouts...obviously these guys did their homework on this. We should give them a special Xmarks commendation and make their resource page a sticky here.

I hadn't seen the Troop7 instructions--but after looking at them, the combination of the two should give you enough information to build him a very nice kilt.
What are your plans for fabric? Many Irish kilts are a combination of greens and saffron (deep orange) or solid saffron. If you can't find any wool or polyviscose and are on a short timeline, check your fabric store for some flannels with greens/whites/oranges.

Re: Making a Kilt for my son
thank you all for you help. I know that 9 yards of fabric will be too much.
His measurements are Hips 22 inches, waist 22 1/2 inches and 14inches from top of hips to knee. I do so much thank you all for you help. I think that I might have bit off more than I can chew.
