WWI Canadian piper film
Hello All,
I've been an infrequent visitor of late. Hope all are well.
So, I recall a thread from a few years back about a Canadian Highland piper in WWI (I think) whose story was made into a feature film. Tried searching IMdB & here (275 threads for WWI piper), but had no luck. Can anyone help me?
Also, am watching "Breaker Morant" after years. What was the Highland Reg't represented?
Have a great night!

You may be referring to James Richardson VC and "The Pipes of War"

Finn, I agree with Rex, but I think the film you're referring to hasn't been completed yet. Here's a link to the website:

This was originally scheduled for release in the Fall of 2010, I believe, so either there have been some serious production delays or, as sadly happens with these things sometimes, financial hurdles to be leaped.
There is a long out-of-print book by the same title -- The Pipes of War -- by Sir Bruce Seton and Pipe-Major John Grant. Published in 1920 its a record of the achievements of pipers of Scottish and Overseas Regiments during the 14-18 war. The tipped-in fronticepiece is a painting of Piper James Richardson, VC of the Canadian Scottish at Regina Trench. There are other drawings and copies of paintings tipped-in, too: Piper Daniel Laidlaw VC of the Scottish Borderers at Loos, Piper Kenneth Mackay of the Camerons at Quatre-Bras, Pipe-Major Howarth DCM of the Gordons at Neuve Chapelle.

Seems it has been reprinted recently, many copies shown at Alibris -- won't have the lovely tipped-in artwork, but at least available.
Proudly Duncan [maternal], MacDonald and MacDaniel [paternal].

Yes, I had been expecting the film to have been released by now. Its unfortunate. Ah well. For some reason, I was under the impression that the Canadian gov't was backing it- maybe through the CBC. Not the first, or last, time I'm wrong.
Thanks for all the great info on the book, ThistleDown.

Thanks, Sydnie. The reprint is GBP23, but for those who are interested only in James Richardson VC:

I would love to see this!!!! One of my grandfathers, Albert Frederick Rassmuss, was a pilot and artillery soldier in that horrible bloodbath. He may have crossed paths with James Richardson. My grandfather was very young, only 17, and the horror he witnessed affected him the rest of his life. May James, Albert Frederick and all the countless brave soldiers of WWI rest in peace!
