Mackie's ice cream king rides bull through Aberdeen after being named uni rector

From the Daily Record (kilted pic and piping):

    http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/sc...6908-23799616/

ICE cream king Dr Maitland Mackie piped himself through the streets on the back of a bull yesterday as part of a student tradition.

Aberdeen University students carried the 74-year-old atop Angus the Bull after he became their new rector.

The Mackie’s Ice Cream chief’s three-year term began with the jaunt to St Machars Bar, where he bought the students a round.

Maitland, who went to the uni in the 1950s, said: “I’ve never ridden a bull before, but before today I was asking the university to actually get me a real bull but they weren’t having it.

“The ride was absolutely fantastic, but it wasn’t fast enough, I was trying to get the lads to go quicker but they couldn’t.”

The Aberdeenshire businessman added: “I was chuffed to bits when they told me I was going to be rector.”

Hmmmm... not much like the "Bull Riding" seen in a south-west type U.S. rodeo. Now that's something I'd like to see: A kilted rodeo bull rider. But anything for ice cream!!!

Well I guess that is an unusual Rectorial mode of transport!

I had a pint bought me in Aberdeen once! (mind you a long time ago!)

I love this tradition! I have many fond memories of having a pint at St. Machar's after class. Thanks for sharing the link.

Maitland is a generous chap, a maker of very fine ice cream and has a great commitment to education. He should make an excellent rector.
