Penannular
Hey Everyone! Nice new update to the board I like.
Mr. Meghan went on a road trip with his family over spring break and came back with a lovely little accessory for my tartan skirt or sash. It's called a penannular and I actually had no idea what it was until last night. I will have to take a picture of it when I get home from work, but I wanted to ask how it is usually worn nowadays. I read on the paper that it came with that it is worn on a great kilt sometimes. Since I don't wear great kilts, would it look silly on my tartan skirt?
The one that he got for me is about 2.5 inches in diameter and has really pretty blue stones on it that is found in Colorado (I think that's what he said). It's in a design from the Ulster Stone which is quite appropriate since my tartan skirt is from Derry.
Any info on these would be nice. Thanks guys

I would think a penanular would be an appropriate pin for any application to which you'd use a brooch of that size... be it for a sash, a kilt pin, on a lapel, or wherever. You might try googling, to find some examples of usage.

That would be great to hold any sash, scarf, etc. A friend of mine used a small one to hold a tartan scarf around her hat as a brim, then let the excess hang down in back. In fact she had bought it not knowing what it was called until I told her.

those are great ideas I still need to buy a sash to go with my skirt for Eid so perhaps I will use it as a pretty kilt pin until then.

I think penannulars look great, timeless. Just be careful they they don't catch on anything and tear your nice clothes.

Congratulations for the new accessory, Meghan. Hope it works out well.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

In accordance with The British Museum I always wear my Pennanullar brooch above and a bit to the right of the little round one.

I think a penannular would look lovely on a tartan skirt. My mother wears one that I gave her to attach her tartan sash.
Here is the second hand penannular that I got off eBay (from Australia) and use as a kilt pin on my New World Irish tartan kilt.

Is there any physical reason for that position or is it more a question of tradition?
